Market Capitalisation Rises by GHS 3.98bn as GSE Closes Week in Positive Territory
The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) ended last week on a positive note, supported by marginal gains in its benchmark indices and a notable expansion in market capitalisation, amid heightened trading activity dominated by MTN Ghana (MTNGH).
The GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) edged up by 3.61 points, representing a 0.04 per cent week-on-week gain, to close at 8,811.11 points. This pushed the year-to-date (YTD) return of the market to 0.47 per cent. Similarly, the GSE Financial Stock Index (GSE-FSI) advanced by 0.39 per cent over the week to settle at 4,687.52 points, lifting its YTD return to 0.87 per cent.
Market capitalisation expanded by approximately GHS 3.98 billion during the week to close at GHS 176.23 billion, reflecting price gains across several equities.
Activity on the bourse was largely driven by strong performances in GLD and First Atlantic Bank (FAB). GLD led the gainers, appreciating by GHS 46.37 to close at GHS 494.77, while FAB added GHS 0.06 to end the week at GHS 7.77. Other stocks that recorded price increases included Enterprise Group (EGL), Clydestone Ghana (CLYD), CAL Bank (CAL), Republic Bank Ghana (RBGH), GCB Bank (GCB) and Standard Chartered Bank Ghana (SCB).
In contrast, MTNGH was the only equity to record a price decline during the week, shedding GHS 0.01 to close at GHS 4.20.
Despite the marginal price dip, MTNGH dominated trading activity on the market. The telecoms giant emerged as the most traded equity by both volume and value, accounting for 41.67 million shares valued at approximately GHS 173.23 million. CAL followed with a traded volume of 913,283 shares, while GCB, SIC Insurance Company (SIC) and CLYD rounded out the list of the top five most traded equities.
Overall market activity improved significantly, with total trading volume rising to 44.20 million shares, up from 21.55 million shares in the previous week. Correspondingly, the value of shares traded more than doubled to GHS 189.20 million, compared with GHS 90.04 million recorded a week earlier.
The modest gains in the indices, coupled with the sharp rise in turnover, suggest sustained investor participation on the local bourse, even as price movements remained mixed across listed equities.
