McLaren’s Oscar Piastri Out of Australian Grand Prix After Early Crash
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri has been forced to withdraw from the Australian Grand Prix, set to take place on Sunday, after a crash during a reconnaissance lap. The incident occurred just 40 minutes before the start of the season-opening race at Albert Park, leaving Piastri’s team scrambling to focus on their remaining driver’s performance.
Piastri, who finished third in the championship last season, appeared to lose control as he exited turn four, locking up while hitting the exit curb. He skidded into the barriers, causing significant damage to the right front wheel, front wing, and nose of his car. Fortunately, Piastri confirmed over the team radio that he was unharmed and exited the car unaided, walking back to the pit area.
McLaren team principal Zak Brown expressed his disappointment but emphasized the need to regroup quickly. “We’ve got to focus on the car we have in the race,” said Brown, referring to defending champion Lando Norris, who was set to compete. “We’ll do a post-mortem after the race to figure out what went wrong.”
Piastri was slated to start fifth on the grid, a strong position that would have bolstered McLaren’s chances for a competitive race. With the new engine regulations in Formula One leading to a steep learning curve, many teams have reported reliability issues and challenges adjusting to changes in car dynamics that emphasize energy deployment and regeneration.
