Ghana Premier League champions Medeama SC have stepped up preparations for their title defence with a 2-1 victory over Ivorian side Yamoussoukro FC in a pre-season friendly, securing a useful result as the Tarkwa-based club builds towards the start of the 2026/27 domestic campaign.
The fixture offered Medeama an opportunity to test their developing squad against opposition from outside Ghana and sharpen match fitness before competitive football returns in September.
While pre-season results carry limited competitive significance, matches of this nature give technical teams a clearer indication of tactical readiness, individual fitness and squad depth after weeks of training.
For Medeama, the victory is particularly useful because the club enters the new season under considerably greater expectations.
The Mauve and Yellow are defending Ghana Premier League champions after winning the 2025/26 title, their second championship in the competition. Their immediate task is therefore no longer simply competing near the top of the table but demonstrating that last season’s success can be sustained.
The Ivorian club secured promotion to the country’s top flight after a strong 2025/26 campaign and went on to claim the Ligue 2 championship following a dramatic title-deciding contest with OFC Adiaké. The club’s own website describes the campaign as a historic season that delivered promotion to Ligue 1.
That gave Medeama the benefit of facing a side carrying confidence from a successful promotion campaign rather than opposition simply providing training-ground resistance.
The 2-1 scoreline should nevertheless be interpreted primarily as part of the preparation process.
Coaches generally use pre-season friendlies to experiment with combinations, assess new players and distribute minutes across the squad. Tactical consistency and physical conditioning often matter more than the final result, particularly several weeks before league competition begins.
For Medeama, however, winning while undertaking that experimentation helps sustain momentum.
The champions face a demanding opening to their Ghana Premier League defence.
The Ghana Football Association has scheduled the 2026/27 campaign to begin over the weekend of September 4-7, 2026, with Medeama opening away against Dreams FC. They then return to the TnA Stadium to host newly promoted Port City FC before travelling to Vision FC.

The technical staff can also assess where further recruitment may be necessary. This becomes especially relevant because Medeama’s fixture list contains several potentially defining matches early in the season.
After their challenging opening block, they travel to regional rivals FC Samartex on Matchday Seven before a major away encounter with Asante Kotoko around Matchday Nine. They are also scheduled to host Bibiani Gold Stars later in the first round, with their season eventually concluding away against Hearts of Oak.
Those fixtures illustrate the scale of the task involved in defending the championship.
Medeama cannot expect last season’s success to carry automatically into the new campaign. Domestic rivals will strengthen, promoted clubs will enter with momentum, and established challengers will view games against the champions as benchmark encounters.
The usefulness of Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Yamoussoukro FC must therefore be measured in preparation rather than prestige.
It gives the squad competitive minutes, tests combinations and provides a positive result against a newly promoted Ivorian top-flight side.
What matters next is whether Medeama can turn those encouraging pre-season performances into a settled team capable of handling the demands of the opening weeks.
The champions have already proved they can reach the summit of Ghanaian football.
The 2026/27 season presents a different examination: whether they can stay there.
