Minority demands resignation of BoG Governor in 21 days
The Minority in Parliament has issued a resounding call for the resignation of Dr. Ernest Addison, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG). The NDC attributes the country’s economic downturn to what they deem as Dr. Addison’s ineptitude.
Accusing the Central Bank of swiftly constructing a new headquarters following the alleged economic collapse, the Minority further asserts that the swift construction is emblematic of the Governor’s questionable decisions.
In a press conference on Tuesday, May 8, 2023, the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, articulated that the “illegal printing of money by the BoG” led to the depletion of Ghana’s external reserves, a pivotal factor contributing to the unprecedented depreciation of the Cedi and hyperinflation in 2022.
Dr. Forson continued by highlighting alleged breaches of banking regulations, noting that the Governor “breached section 30(7) of the Bank of Ghana Act, 2012 (Act 612) and Section 60 of the Bank of Ghana Amendment Act, 2016 (Act 918).” The economic ramifications of this purported mismanagement reportedly pushed an estimated 850,000 individuals below the poverty line.
The Minority insists that those responsible for the BoG’s perceived mismanagement must be held accountable. Consequently, the opposition party has issued a demand for the Governor and his deputies to step down within 21 days. Failure to comply, they warned, would lead to a “popular action to occupy the Central Bank” aimed at unseating the alleged “inept, callous and criminal mis-managers of the finances of this country.”
