Mourinho and Madrid: Can Football’s Fallen Emperor Reclaim the Bernabeu Throne?

The possibility of Jose Mourinho returning to Real Madrid has ignited intense debate across European football, with questions growing over whether the veteran manager can revive past glories or whether the modern game has moved beyond him.

More than a decade after his turbulent first spell at the Santiago Bernabeu, Mourinho is once again being linked with the Spanish giants as club president Florentino Perez searches for answers following another disappointing campaign.

The Portuguese coach’s first tenure in Madrid between 2010 and 2013 was one of the most dramatic periods in the club’s modern history. Mourinho arrived as football’s ultimate winner after remarkable success with FC Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan, but his years in Spain became defined as much by conflict as silverware.

He famously led Madrid to a Copa del Rey triumph and a La Liga title, breaking the dominance of Barcelona during the peak of Pep Guardiola’s reign. However, his intense confrontations with players, officials and rivals created divisions that eventually consumed his project. Now, in 2026, Mourinho could be set for a sensational comeback.

The prospect has emerged amid growing instability at Madrid following disappointing spells under former club legends Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa. Reports of dressing-room unrest reached a new low this week after a training-ground altercation involving Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni led to disciplinary action.

The situation has reportedly convinced Perez that Madrid need a strong disciplinarian capable of restoring order to a talented but underperforming squad featuring stars such as Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham.Yet Mourinho’s possible appointment raises major concerns.

Since leaving Madrid in 2013, the former Champions League-winning coach has struggled to reproduce the dominance that once made him one of football’s most feared managers. Stints at Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, AS Roma, Fenerbahce and now Benfica have produced flashes of success but little sustained excellence.

His Europa League triumph with United in 2017 and Conference League title with Roma in 2022 were notable achievements, but they fell far below the standards Mourinho once demanded of himself during his peak years.

Football has also evolved significantly during the past decade. The tactical revolution led by Guardiola and later Jurgen Klopp transformed elite football into a game built on fluid attacking systems and relentless pressing intensity. Mourinho’s more confrontational and pragmatic methods have increasingly appeared outdated in comparison.

Questions now surround whether he could successfully manage Madrid’s modern generation of superstars, many of whom have been treated as global icons since their teenage years.

Concerns have also resurfaced over Mourinho’s handling of controversial situations. Earlier this season, after Vinicius Jr suffered racial abuse during a Champions League clash against Benfica, Mourinho faced criticism for suggesting the Madrid forward had provoked supporters through his celebrations. The comments sparked backlash and renewed scrutiny of the manager’s often divisive public approach.

Still, Mourinho’s supporters argue that his charisma, winning mentality and ability to thrive under pressure could provide the shock therapy Madrid desperately need.

There is no doubt his return would bring immediate attention and drama to the Bernabeu. Mourinho remains one of football’s biggest personalities, capable of dominating headlines and commanding dressing rooms. Whether that translates into long-term success, however, remains uncertain.

For some, the potential reunion feels like a final opportunity for one of football’s greatest managers to rewrite the closing chapter of his career. For others, it risks becoming another example of a club clinging to memories of former glory rather than building for the future.

If Mourinho does complete a stunning return to Madrid, one thing is certain — the spotlight will follow him immediately. Whether trophies follow as well is the question the football world is waiting to see answered.
