MTN FA Cup: Asante Kotoko edge impressive Benab FC to advance to next round
Kumasi Asante Kotoko advanced to the next stage of the competition in their 2-1 win over Benab FC in the Round of 32 fixture on Saturday at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Maxwell Agyemang saved his home side from a possible penalty shootout with an injury time goal as the Porcupine Warriors continue their quest to win the silverware for first time since 2017.
It was a highly competitive game as the lower tier side proved a hard nut to crack for the Premiership side.
En route to this game, Asante Kotoko eliminated last season’s runners up Bechem United 4-2 on penalties with Benab also knocking out Soccer 4 Souls FC.
Kotoko took the lead in the first half through an own goal from Benab’s Alhassan in the 17th minute.
The Porcupine Warriors held on as they went into the break up by a goal to nil.
Back from recess, Benab FC showed some promise and were rewarded with the equalizer in the 69th minute through Umar.
The Division One side came close to scoring a second but were denied by Kotoko goalkeeper Frederick Asare.
A great save from the Benab goalkeeper denied Richmond Lamptey from being the hero of the day in the 90th minute but Maxwell Agyemang scored with the last kick of the game from a corner kick to seal the win for the Ghana Premier League champions.
