National Food Insecurity Rate Declines to 38.1% in Q3 2025
The number of Ghanaians experiencing food insecurity dropped to 12.5 million in the third quarter of 2025, down from 13.4 million in the second quarter, according to the latest Quarterly Food Insecurity Report released by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).
At the national level, the proportion of the population facing food insecurity fell to 38.1 per cent in Q3, compared with 41.1 per cent in Q2, indicating a gradual improvement in access to adequate nutrition.
The report, however, points to ongoing disparities across gender and geographic lines. From the first quarter of 2024 to Q3 2025, female-headed households consistently experienced higher levels of moderate food insecurity. In Q1–Q2 2025, food insecurity among female-headed households peaked at 44.1 per cent, in contrast to 38.7 per cent among male-headed households.
Regional differences also remain significant. The Upper West, North East, and Volta Regions recorded the highest levels of food insecurity, while the Oti Region posted the lowest, improving from 23.8 per cent in Q1 to 18.4 per cent in Q3 2025.
The findings highlight the need for targeted policies and interventions to close gender and regional gaps in food security, even as the overall situation shows signs of modest improvement.
