NCA Addresses Public Concerns Over MTN’s SMP Classification, High Data Pricing
The National Communications Authority (NCA) says it has taken note of public concerns regarding high internet data pricing and the declaration of MTN as a Significant Market Player (SMP).
In a statement issued on Monday, July 22, the NCA stated that the classification of MTN as a SMP aligns with its Mandate further asserting that the declaration of MTN as a SMP is not intended to punish or stifle MTN’s operations but ensure a level playing field for market players and protect consumer choice.
According to the NCA, by implementing measures such as asymmetric interconnection rates, tariff parity and technology neutrality, the NCA aims to promote competition, encourage innovation and protect consumers’ interests.
“These measures enable other operators to compete effectively, offer sustainable pricing and invest in improving service quality,” added the NCA.
Further arguing that, recent data reviewed by the Authority indicates that Ghana ranks 2nd and 3rd in West Africa and Africa respectively in terms of cheapest cost for mobile internet data pricing.
“Data from a report published by cable.co.uk and reviewed by the NCA as part of the regular Billing Monitoring exercise ranked Ghana 3rd in Africa as the country with the cheapest cost pricing for mobile internet data and the 2nd the West Africa region,” it stated.
The NCA assured the public that it will continue to work with all relevant stakeholders to ensure cheap and reliable internet access for Ghanaians.
