  • NCA Board Strengthened with Appointment of UGBS Economist Prof. Agyapomaa Gyeke-Dako

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has sworn in Prof. Agyapomaa Gyeke-Dako, Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Ghana Business School, as a new member of the Governing Board of the National Communications Authority.

Prof. Gyeke-Dako was sworn in together with Alhaji Abdul-Rauf Tanko Ibrahim, Chairman of the Hajj Board and former Member of Parliament for the Yagaba-Kubori Constituency.

Their appointment is expected to strengthen the Authority’s governing structure at a time when Ghana’s communications and digital technology sector is undergoing rapid transformation.

The NCA remains one of the country’s most important regulatory institutions, with responsibility for supervising the communications industry, promoting fair competition, protecting consumer interests and supporting the growth of Ghana’s digital economy.

Prof. Gyeke-Dako’s appointment is particularly significant because it brings strong academic and economic policy expertise to the Board. As an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Ghana Business School, she is expected to contribute to strategic discussions on regulation, market structure, consumer welfare, digital inclusion and the broader economic impact of telecommunications and technology policy.

Her presence on the Board comes at a time when Ghana is deepening its digital transformation agenda, with issues such as data affordability, service quality, digital access, consumer protection, cybersecurity, fintech growth and competition in the telecoms market becoming increasingly important to businesses and households.

Alhaji Abdul-Rauf Tanko Ibrahim also brings public-sector experience and political leadership to the Board, having previously served as Member of Parliament for the Yagaba-Kubori Constituency and currently serving as Chairman of the Hajj Board.

Together, the two new members are expected to support the NCA’s mandate of providing effective oversight of the communications sector while helping the regulator respond to emerging challenges in a fast-changing digital environment.

Speaking at the swearing-in, Minister Sam George underscored the importance of strengthening the Board with capable hands to support the Authority’s work. The Ministry said the appointments would further enhance the Board’s expertise as it continues to provide strategic guidance for Ghana’s communications and digital technology sector.

The appointments come at a critical point for the NCA, as the regulator continues to oversee a sector that has become central to national development, business operations, financial inclusion, public communication and everyday life.

With mobile connectivity, internet access and digital services now deeply embedded in Ghana’s economy, the quality of regulatory oversight will remain essential to ensuring that innovation, competition and consumer protection move together.

Prof. Gyeke-Dako’s entry onto the Board therefore adds an important economic voice to the governance of one of Ghana’s most strategic regulators.
