  • NFL Legend Ed McCaffrey Expands Family Food Business With New Granola Range

McCaffrey Brands, the family-owned food business founded around the sporting legacy of three-time Super Bowl champion Ed McCaffrey, has launched a new line of natural, gluten-free granola as it expands further into the US health and lifestyle food market.

The Denver-based company said McCaffrey’s Rocky Mountain Granola will initially be available in three flavours, Blueberry Lemon Sunrise, Golden Cinnamon Raisin and Almond Cranberry Coconut Crunch,  with nationwide sales through its direct-to-consumer website, Amazon and selected Dick’s Sporting Goods retail channels.

The launch represents the latest expansion of a consumer-products platform built around the McCaffrey family’s reputation in professional sport, nutrition and active lifestyles.

Ed McCaffrey, his wife Lisa and their four sons, Max, Christian, Dylan and Luke, are collectively behind the brand, which has sought to translate family food traditions into commercially scalable products targeting health-conscious households.

The company said the new granola is natural, gluten-free and non-GMO, while also providing protein and fibre.

One of the product’s principal differentiators is what McCaffrey Brands calls a “Short-Baked” process, which lightly toasts the granola rather than exposing it to longer cooking times.

According to the company, the approach is intended to help retain nutritional value while preserving flavour.

That formulation places Rocky Mountain Granola within a highly competitive segment of the packaged food market where consumers increasingly assess products not only on taste and price but also on ingredients, protein content, processing methods and dietary characteristics.

For McCaffrey Brands, the opportunity is to combine that demand with a family identity already closely associated with elite sport.

“Lisa and I believe great food brings people together,” Ed McCaffrey said.

“After raising four boys, we wanted to create a granola we’d be proud to share with our own family. One we’d choose because it tastes great, not just because it’s good for you. We hope Rocky Mountain Granola becomes a favorite for your family, too.”

The family connection forms an important part of the company’s marketing strategy.

Ed McCaffrey built his profile during an NFL career that included three Super Bowl championships, while Lisa McCaffrey played soccer at Stanford.

Their sons have also pursued careers in elite American football.

Christian McCaffrey plays for the San Francisco 49ers, Max McCaffrey is part of the Los Angeles Chargers coaching staff, Dylan McCaffrey is a former University of Michigan quarterback and Luke McCaffrey plays for the Washington Commanders.

McCaffrey Brands is using that collective sporting background to position its products around the intersection of nutrition, family and performance.

The granola launch also expands a portfolio that already includes the company’s Rocky Mountain Mustard range and other protein-focused snacks.

That diversification is significant because it moves the business beyond condiments and into breakfast and snack consumption, giving the company potential access to a much broader and more frequently purchased category.

Granola has become a crowded market, with established food companies competing alongside specialist health brands and direct-to-consumer businesses.

Differentiation is therefore critical.

McCaffrey Brands appears to be relying on three main selling points: recognisable family branding, a Colorado-inspired identity and product positioning around natural ingredients and active lifestyles.

The Rocky Mountain branding also provides a regional story that can be marketed nationally.

Rather than presenting the product as simply another packaged granola, the company is attempting to associate it with Colorado, outdoor living and the McCaffrey family’s sporting background.

Distribution will be another important test of the product’s commercial potential.

The granola is being sold as an eight-pack through McCaffreyGranola.com and as individual products through Amazon, allowing the company to combine direct customer relationships with the reach of one of America’s largest e-commerce marketplaces.

Retail availability through Dick’s Sporting Goods creates an additional channel closely aligned with the brand’s sports and performance positioning.

That mix gives McCaffrey Brands an opportunity to test demand across multiple customer groups without relying exclusively on conventional grocery-store distribution at launch.

Direct-to-consumer sales can also provide valuable information on customer preferences, repeat purchasing and flavour performance, potentially helping the company refine future retail expansion.

The three initial varieties appear designed to cover different consumer preferences.

Blueberry Lemon Sunrise offers a fruit-led option, Golden Cinnamon Raisin reflects a more traditional breakfast flavour profile, while Almond Cranberry Coconut Crunch combines nuts, dried fruit and coconut.

The company has not disclosed pricing, sales targets or financial forecasts for the new product line.

It has also not indicated whether additional flavours or wider grocery distribution are planned.

The launch nonetheless suggests that McCaffrey Brands intends to build a broader packaged food business rather than depend on a single signature product category.

That strategy could benefit from the family’s visibility, but celebrity association alone will not determine long-term performance.

Repeat purchasing in packaged foods depends heavily on taste, price, availability and whether consumers believe the nutritional positioning offers sufficient value relative to competing products.

For McCaffrey Brands, Rocky Mountain Granola therefore represents both a brand extension and a test of how successfully the family’s sports identity can translate into mainstream food retail.

The commercial proposition is straightforward: take a product the McCaffrey family says it would serve at its own table, package it around nutrition and Colorado heritage, and scale it through digital and sports-oriented retail channels.

If consumer uptake is strong, the granola line could become another pillar in McCaffrey Brands’ effort to build a national food portfolio around the family’s name, athletic legacy and emphasis on quality nutrition.
