A survey by the National Communications Authority (NCA) indicate that approximately 16.8 per cent of Ghanaian households have access to internet services.
This translates into some 999 households out of the 5,946 households surveyed across the country, not having access to the internet.
Comparatively, access to the internet in urban areas was found to be around 20 per cent, slightly higher than that of rural localities with 12.8 per cent internet access rate.
Internet penetration in Ghana as at January 2020, according to global research firm, DataReportal, stood at 48 per cent of the total population, representing some 14.76 million internet users.
The number of internet users in Ghana, according to DataReportal increased by 7.5 per cent (1 million) between 2019 and 2020.
The report perused by norvanreports also indicated that, 63.2 per cent individuals aged 5 and above in the urban areas owned a mobile phone compared to the 44.8 per cent of the same group in the rural areas.
The objective of the survey by the NCA, is to provide a reliable database at the household level to meet the increasing demand for data on ICT indicators as well as contribute to policy and data-driven decision making to promote development of the ICT industry in Ghana.
The survey focused on individual ownership and usage of mobile phones, SIM cards and computers, internet access and usage, mobile money, bundling, households ownership and usage of ICT products and services.
