- Paris Named World’s Coziest Autumn Destination in New Travel Ranking
Paris has been named the world’s coziest city for an autumn break, leading a ranking dominated by European destinations offering dense networks of cafés, bookstores and public parks.
The French capital finished ahead of Turin and Copenhagen in research published by digital entertainment platform BC Game, which assessed popular city-break destinations according to the atmosphere and affordability they offer travellers during the autumn months.
Prague and Boston completed the top five, while Strasbourg, Kraków, Montreal, Amsterdam and Seoul also appeared among the 10 highest-ranked destinations.
The study measured café, park and bookstore density alongside the number of rainy days and average October temperatures. It also considered local coffee and cinema ticket prices before combining the results into a Coziness Score.
The ranking reflects a shift in tourism preferences beyond traditional measures such as landmark attractions, hotel capacity and visitor numbers. It attempts instead to capture whether a city supports slower travel: time spent walking through parks, browsing bookstores or sitting in cafés after the summer crowds have receded.
“Autumn is actually the best time to explore most cities,” BC Game’s chief executive said.
“By then, the summer crowds are gone, and the residents are back, so the city gets its natural tempo again and you can feel its real vibe.”
Paris secured first place with 47.4 cafés, 45.1 bookstores and 34.5 parks per 10 square kilometres.
In absolute terms, the French capital offers nearly 500 cafés, about 475 bookstores and more than 360 parks, providing visitors with a wide range of indoor and outdoor options.
October temperatures average 17°C, while the city records an estimated 14 rainy days during the period.
The result suggests that Paris’ advantage comes less from any single measure than from the concentration of amenities within a relatively compact urban environment.
A visitor can move between neighbourhood cafés, bookshops, cinemas and parks without treating each stop as a separate excursion. That density supports the sort of unhurried travel experience the index is designed to measure.
Paris is not the cheapest destination in the ranking. The average cup of coffee costs US$5.05, substantially more than in Turin or Prague.
Its lead therefore illustrates an important distinction between affordability and convenience. Travellers may pay more in Paris, but they gain access to a large number of venues and attractions within relatively short distances.
Turin placed second, establishing the northern Italian city as one of Europe’s strongest but less prominent autumn destinations.
The city has more than 270 cafés and 200 bookstores, with density estimates of 21 cafés and 16 bookstores per 10 square kilometres.
Its average October temperature of 18°C is slightly warmer than Paris, while the city records approximately 10 rainy days.
Coffee costs about US$2.04, the lowest price among the 10 destinations listed in the study.
Turin’s appeal lies partly in offering many of the qualities associated with larger European destinations without the same scale of visitor congestion or expense.
Its combination of mild weather, relatively inexpensive coffee and extensive café culture may make it attractive to travellers seeking a slower urban holiday rather than an itinerary dominated by major tourist landmarks.
Copenhagen ranked third and emerged as the highest-placed Nordic city.
The Danish capital has more than 200 cafés and 66 parks, translating into densities of 23 cafés and seven parks per 10 square kilometres.
At 13°C, its average October temperature is the lowest among the top five cities. It also records about 15 rainy days.
Coffee is relatively expensive at an average of US$7.12 the highest price in the ranking.
Those figures might appear unfavourable in a conventional warm-weather tourism index. But the BC Game study gives weight to the availability of indoor spaces and the atmosphere created by cooler autumn conditions.
Copenhagen’s placement reflects the attraction of Scandinavian indoor culture, where cafés, restaurants and public spaces are designed to remain inviting as temperatures fall and daylight hours shorten.
The city demonstrates that “coziness” is not necessarily the absence of cold or rain. It can also describe how effectively a destination adapts to those conditions.
Prague ranked fourth and stood out as one of the most affordable European destinations in the study.
A cup of coffee costs an average of US$3.88, while a cinema ticket is estimated at about US$13, placing both below prices in many competing cities.
The Czech capital has roughly 130 parks and 145 bookstores, although its larger urban area means their density is lower than in Paris, Turin or Copenhagen.
October temperatures average 14°C, with about 11 rainy days.
Prague’s position shows how absolute numbers and density can offer different pictures of a destination.
The city contains enough parks and bookstores to support a varied autumn visit, but visitors may have to travel further between them than in a more compact capital. Lower prices partly compensate for that difference, particularly for travellers planning longer stays.
Boston ranked fifth and was the only North American city to appear in the top five.
The city has more than 250 cafés, 265 bookstores and 143 parks, reinforcing its reputation for neighbourhood culture and literary history.
Its average October temperature is 17°C, equal to Paris, while it records about 12 rainy days.
Coffee costs an average of US$5.22.
Boston’s 11 bookstores and 11 cafés per 10 square kilometres place it below Paris on density, but its concentration of universities, historic neighbourhoods and independent cultural venues supports a distinctly local autumn experience.
Montreal was the other North American destination in the top 10, placing eighth with an average October temperature of 14°C and coffee priced at about US$4.02.
Seoul ranked 10th overall but emerged as the study’s leading Asian destination.
The South Korean capital offers 34 cafés and 23 bookstores per 10 square kilometres, placing it among the strongest cities in the ranking for indoor amenities.
Its October temperature averages 21°C, the warmest among the top 10, while the city records only seven rainy days — the lowest figure in the table.
Coffee costs about US$4.05.
Seoul’s position raises an interesting methodological question. On weather and café availability alone, the city compares favourably with many higher-ranked destinations. Its lower placement may reflect weaker performance on park density, affordability or other components used to calculate the overall score.
For travellers who prefer mild weather and fewer wet days, Seoul could therefore prove more attractive than its 10th-place position initially suggests.
Eight of the 10 highest-ranked destinations are in Europe.
Strasbourg placed sixth, followed by Kraków in seventh. Amsterdam ranked ninth despite recording 17 rainy days, the highest number among the listed cities.
Europe’s dominance may partly reflect its concentration of compact, walkable cities where cafés, bookstores, cinemas and public parks are embedded within established neighbourhoods.
Such cities are well suited to an index measuring amenities per 10 square kilometres. Larger, more dispersed destinations may offer more venues in absolute terms but score less favourably on density.
The ranking should consequently be read as a guide to a particular type of urban experience rather than a definitive measure of destination quality.
Weather averages do not guarantee the conditions an individual traveller will encounter, while citywide prices can vary considerably between neighbourhoods and establishments.
Café and bookstore counts may also favour destinations with strong formal business listings, potentially understating informal cultural spaces elsewhere.
The study also points to the commercial appeal of travelling outside the peak summer season.
Hotels and airlines may offer lower prices as demand moderates, while visitors can encounter shorter queues and less pressure on major attractions.
“Prices drop too, and even late bookings work as tourists clear out and hotels offer plenty of discounts,” BC Game’s chief executive said.
“Just make sure to pick less rainy cities, and you are set for a pleasant experience.”
For destinations, autumn tourism offers an opportunity to extend visitor spending beyond the traditional summer peak and support hospitality businesses during quieter months.
For travellers, the attraction is a city operating closer to its normal rhythm.
Paris’ first-place position rests on that proposition: not that the city becomes inexpensive or rain-free in October, but that its cafés, parks, bookstores and mild temperatures make the transition from summer to winter part of the experience itself.
