  • Paul Graves Joins Anglogold Board as Miner Sharpens Focus on Risk and Sustainability

AngloGold Ashanti has appointed Paul Graves, the former chief executive of Rio Tinto Lithium, as an independent non-executive director, adding more than three decades of experience in natural resources, corporate finance and public-company leadership to its board.

The appointment takes effect on October 1, 2026, the gold producer said in a statement issued on Friday.

Mr Graves will serve on AngloGold Ashanti’s Audit and Risk Committee and its Social, Ethics and Sustainability Committee — two bodies whose responsibilities have become increasingly important as large mining groups confront volatile commodity markets, tighter environmental requirements and closer scrutiny of capital allocation.

“Paul brings to the Board a rare combination of international executive leadership, deep financial discipline and decades of experience across commodities and natural resources,” said Jochen Tilk, chair of AngloGold Ashanti.

“His skill set and impressive track record will bring exceptional value to AngloGold Ashanti as we continue to execute on our long-term strategy.”

The appointment gives AngloGold a director whose career spans mining operations, investment banking, corporate transactions and financial management. That breadth is particularly relevant to a global producer balancing operational growth with the need to maintain financial discipline across different jurisdictions.

Mr Graves most recently served as chief executive of Rio Tinto Lithium after the mining group acquired Arcadium Lithium, where he had been president and chief executive.

His experience in lithium broadens the range of commodity-market knowledge represented on AngloGold’s board. Although the company remains focused on gold, lithium has emerged as one of the mining industry’s most closely watched commodities because of its role in electric-vehicle batteries and energy storage.

The lessons from that market — including the challenges of rapid capacity expansion, fluctuating prices and capital-intensive project development — may be useful for a gold producer making long-term investment decisions under similarly uncertain conditions.

Before Arcadium Lithium, Mr Graves led Livent Corporation as president and chief executive. Livent was one of the established producers supplying lithium products to battery and industrial markets.

His leadership experience at both Livent and Arcadium placed him at the centre of a sector that underwent rapid consolidation and shifting investor expectations as producers responded to demand forecasts linked to the global energy transition.

Mr Graves also served as executive vice-president and chief financial officer of FMC Corporation between 2012 and 2018.

That period provided him with experience overseeing financial strategy in a publicly listed multinational business — a background that is likely to be particularly relevant to his work on AngloGold’s Audit and Risk Committee.

The committee’s role extends beyond reviewing financial statements. It must assess the quality of internal controls, the management of financial and operational risks, and the assumptions underlying major investment decisions.

Mining companies typically commit large amounts of capital years before a project generates revenue. Errors in cost assumptions, construction schedules or commodity-price forecasts can therefore have long-lasting consequences for shareholders.

Mr Graves’ appointment suggests that AngloGold is placing continued emphasis on the relationship between operational ambition and balance-sheet discipline.

Before moving into corporate leadership, he spent 12 years in investment banking at Goldman Sachs, where he became a partner. He served as head of Natural Resources Asia and global head of Chemical Investment Banking.

That background gives him experience advising companies on transactions and capital-market strategy, as well as evaluating businesses from the perspective of investors and lenders.

For AngloGold, such expertise could strengthen board-level scrutiny of acquisitions, disposals, project financing and the allocation of capital among competing operations.

Mr Graves currently serves on the board of Charles River Laboratories International, where he chairs the Strategic Planning and Capital Allocation Committee and sits on the Audit Committee.

His continuing responsibilities at Charles River also indicate experience in overseeing strategy outside the mining industry, potentially bringing a wider corporate perspective to AngloGold’s board.

Mr Graves will also join AngloGold’s Social, Ethics and Sustainability Committee.

The combination of appointments is notable because environmental and social questions are no longer separate from financial performance in the mining industry.

Community relations, water management, mine safety, rehabilitation obligations and regulatory compliance can affect production, project timelines and access to capital. Failures in these areas can quickly become material financial risks.

By placing Mr Graves on both the Audit and Risk Committee and the Social, Ethics and Sustainability Committee, AngloGold is positioning his financial and natural-resources experience across two areas that are increasingly interconnected.

The decision may help the board evaluate sustainability commitments not only as matters of corporate responsibility, but also as factors affecting project economics, operational resilience and long-term shareholder returns.

For investors, the appointment will ultimately be judged by whether stronger board expertise produces better decisions.

Mr Graves arrives with experience from several points in the corporate cycle: advising natural-resources companies as an investment banker, managing the finances of a multinational business and leading companies through a rapidly changing commodity market.

AngloGold’s challenge will be to translate that experience into sharper risk oversight and disciplined capital deployment as it pursues its long-term strategy.

The company is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker AU and on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange under ANG.
