PRESEC-Legon Gifted State-Of-The-Art AI Lab By 1999 Year Group
The Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC-Legon) has marked its 86th anniversary with the inauguration of a state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence (AI) Lab.
The facility, spearheaded by the school’s 1999 Year Group in collaboration with the administration, alumni president Dr. Ernest Ofori Sarpong, and corporate sponsors, is set to revolutionize STEM education in Ghana.
The launch of the state-of-the-art AI Lab took place on Saturday, November 30, 2024, during the prestigious school’s Speech and Prize-Giving Day celebrations at the PRESEC campus in Legon, Accra.
Transforming STEM Education in Ghana
The President of the 1999 Year Group, Wonder Madilo, described the initiative as a transformative milestone in STEM education, aligning with Ghana’s national priority of digitalization.
The AI Lab branded the Odadee 99 eXperience Center, seeks to prepare students for global digital transformation by equipping them with cutting-edge skills in robotics, machine learning, and AI research.
Richard Ansong, the project’s Finance & Communication Chair and a partner at PwC Ghana emphasized the lab’s focus on bridging the gap between academic curricula and industry requirements by blending technical expertise with essential soft skills.
A First in West Africa
The AI Lab is believed to be the first purpose-built facility of its kind for secondary schools in West Africa.
Designed to be solar-powered and meet green certification standards, the lab will feature computing arrays, robotics setups, design studios, and lecture spaces, empowering students to lead in Ghana’s digital transformation.
Sustainability and Future Vision
At the handover ceremony, the 1999 Year Group plans to announce additional sustainability measures to ensure the lab’s long-term impact. PRESEC Headmaster, Mr. David Odjija, commended the group for their unwavering commitment to innovation, stating, “The vision of the 1999 Year Group underscores their dedication to advancing technology and education in Ghana, exemplifying PRESEC’s motto: In Lumine Tuo Videbimus Lumen (In Your Light, We Shall See Light).”
A Call for Broader Support
Yaw Nti-Addae, a computational biologist and data engineer, and technical advisor to the project, expressed optimism about the lab’s potential, urging corporate organizations and philanthropists to support initiatives that keep Africa competitive in the AI-driven global landscape.
