President Mahama Orders Immediate Cancellation of Fuel Allowances for Appointees Amid Austerity Push
President John Dramani Mahama has issued a sweeping directive cancelling all fuel allowances and fuel allocations to political appointees, in a fresh bid to rein in public spending and realign government priorities.
The measure, which takes immediate effect, is part of a broader cost-containment strategy by the Mahama administration aimed at curbing recurrent expenditure and redirecting scarce public resources towards critical development sectors.
“The President believes that leadership must also bear its part of the sacrifice it is calling on the people to make,” said Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President, in a statement released on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
The cancellation follows earlier fiscal tightening measures, including a reduction in the size of government through the appointment of fewer ministers and Presidential Office staff. The Government has also cut non-essential spending, including terminating satellite TV subscriptions in offices at the Presidency and other public facilities.
