President Mahama’s Job Approval Rate Pegged at 67% as Public Optimism Remains High

President John Mahama has maintained a strong public mandate, posting a 67 per cent job approval rating, according to the December 2025 National Tracking Poll by Global InfoAnalytics.

The approval rating, unchanged from the previous quarter, suggests sustained public confidence in the President’s leadership as 2025 draws to a close. Support spans all regions, including areas traditionally aligned with the opposition.

Approval is strongest among supporters of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), where 93 per cent expressed satisfaction with the President’s performance. Notably, President Mahama also secured a 69 per cent approval rating among floating voters. Among supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), 28 per cent approved of his performance. Overall disapproval stood at 24 per cent, representing a marginal two-percentage-point increase.

Beyond presidential approval, the poll points to a generally optimistic national mood. Sixty-six per cent of respondents believe Ghana is heading in the right direction, a figure that has remained stable compared with the previous quarter.

Optimism cuts across all regions. The Upper West Region recorded the highest confidence level at 81 per cent, followed by the Savannah Region at 79 per cent. Even in the Ashanti Region, long regarded as an opposition stronghold, 45 per cent of respondents said the country is on the right path.

However, the survey highlights sharp partisan differences. While 91 per cent of NDC supporters believe Ghana is moving in the right direction, 61 per cent of NPP supporters disagree. Floating voters largely align with the optimistic view, with 68 per cent expressing confidence in the country’s trajectory.

Economic performance appears to be a key driver of public sentiment. The 2026 Budget, presented by Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, received a favourable response from 66 per cent of respondents. Dissatisfaction stood at 18 per cent, while 16 per cent were neutral.

This confidence is reflected in living conditions. A majority of respondents (56 per cent) reported an improvement in their standard of living over the past year. While 27 per cent said conditions remained unchanged and 12 per cent reported a decline, expectations remain upbeat, with 70 per cent anticipating further improvement in 2026.

On governance, perceptions also improved. Sixty per cent of respondents said the government is doing enough to fight corruption, up from 58 per cent in the previous quarter. Additionally, 56 per cent believe the overall state of corruption is improving, compared with 17 per cent who think it has worsened.

Efforts to combat illegal mining, or galamsey, received mixed but cautiously positive assessments. Nationally, 56 per cent believe the government is doing enough to address the problem, while 47 per cent said the situation has not worsened under the current administration. In mining communities, 43 per cent shared the view that conditions have not deteriorated.

The poll also points to strong public support for constitutional and governance reforms. A majority backed extending the presidential term to five years (57 per cent), barring Members of Parliament from serving as ministers (58 per cent), and introducing the direct election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (63 per cent). Other supported reforms include lowering the presidential age requirement (55 per cent), abolishing the death penalty (58 per cent), and limiting political campaigns to 120 days before elections (56 per cent).

Demographic shifts are increasingly shaping Ghana’s political landscape. Gen Z and Millennial voters now account for nearly 78 per cent of the electorate, with 64 per cent of respondents expressing a preference for younger leaders.

On party affiliation, the NDC leads with 41 per cent despite a slight decline, while NPP support fell for the third consecutive period to 26 per cent. Floating voters edged up to 19 per cent. By education level, the NDC maintains a strong advantage among tertiary-educated voters, while the NPP performs strongest among voters with no formal education, where the gap between the two parties narrows significantly.

Global InfoAnalytics said the survey was conducted among 13,495 voters across all 16 regions and 83 constituencies nationwide.
