Prez Akufo-Addo urges Germany to help Ghana’s debt restructuring efforts
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on Germany to encourage China, a member of the Paris Club, to support Ghana’s debt restructuring efforts.
During a visit by German Finance Minister, Christian Lindner, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the need for the Paris Club to establish a creditors committee to support the country’s efforts to restore economic growth.
The President’s priority is to conclude negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and reach a deal by mid-March of this year.
He highlighted the domestic debt exchange programme that has now been virtually concluded as a step forward in this process.
However, President Akufo-Addo stressed the need for other creditors to support Ghana’s efforts to restructure its external and domestic debts, in order to facilitate a successful IMF deal.
He specifically asked for Germany’s assistance in encouraging China to participate in the restructuring programme.
President Akufo-Addo praised the German government for its support in overcoming the country’s economic difficulties and for its contributions to peace efforts in the West African region.
He expressed concern about the spillover of terrorism from the Sahel region and its impact on cross-border security in West Africa.
In response, Mr. Lindner assured the President that the German government will do all it can to support West Africa in dealing with its issues, acknowledging the importance of stability and security in the region for Europe’s security.
He highlighted the German government’s interest in bilateral trade opportunities with Ghana.
