The Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC), has come out with its findings with respect to investigations carried out to determine the root causes of recent power outages in the country.
The PURC’s investigations into the causes of power outages was necessitated by the varying reasons assigned to the power outages by officials of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ministry of Energy.
In a press release dated May 7, 2021, the Commission attributed the recent power outages in the country to five factors affecting the value chain supply of electricity to Ghanaians.
The factors, the PURC notes it has been able to identify through its regulatory monitoring include; Technical challenges in the natural gas supply network, planned and unplanned maintenance activities on aspects of the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS) and the reduction in reactive power support in the mid-portion of the country.
