Real Madrid Edges Celta Vigo in Copa del Rey Thriller
Real Madrid triumphed 5-2 over Celta Vigo in the Copa del Rey Round of 16 on Thursday, thanks to a brilliant extra-time performance from 18-year-old Endrick, who scored twice.
After a disappointing 5-2 loss to Barcelona in the Super Cup, Madrid started strong with Kylian Mbappé opening the scoring in the first half. Celta felt aggrieved after a missed penalty call just before the goal. Vinícius Júnior added a second for Madrid early in the second half, seemingly putting them in control.
However, Celta fought back, with Jonathan Bamba scoring in the 83rd minute after a Madrid error. Marcos Alonso then converted a penalty in stoppage time, equalizing and forcing extra time.
In the extra period, Endrick struck first, putting Madrid ahead again. Federico Valverde followed with a powerful long-range goal, and Endrick sealed the win with a clever backheel finish.
The victory secures Madrid’s spot in the quarterfinals, but concerns about their defense remain.
Earlier, Osasuna eliminated cup holders Athletic Bilbao, while Real Sociedad advanced with a 3-1 win over Rayo Vallecano.
