Director of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) – Africa, Jamil Ampomah, has said a repositioning of the accounting profession in the aftermath of the Covid pandemic is required to ensure that the profession continues to provide value to the wider public.
Speaking at the third ACCA Africa Members’ Convention Conference on Tuesday, December 14, 2021, Mr Ampomah noted the accountancy profession over the last decade has been at the heart of several socio-economic challenges and accounting professionals have had to navigate through radical advancements in technology and more recently the Covid pandemic.
In view of that, he noted that the profession must chart a new course post-Covid and provide the route to the Continent’s recovery from the pandemic.
Delivering the opening remarks for the webinar which starts today – Tuesday, December 14 – and ends on Thursday, December 16, 2021, Mr Ampomah averred the role and relevance of the accounting profession in the new order and other pertinent issues including the role that accountants play in creating sustainably transformed businesses as well as exploring accounting at the centre of policy development and economic planning will be deliberated on by industry experts.

The Convention is under the theme: Repositioning the Profession in Africa to Drive and Support Economic Recovery, Sustainability and Social Governance.
Africa Members’ Convention Conference is a regional networking platform for ACCA members across Africa, facilitating critical discussions to align industry expectations with the agenda of the accountancy profession and finance professionals.
The Convention over the next three days will explore three sub-thematic areas namely;
- Africa’s accountants at the heart of the continent’s route to recovery looking at the opportunities to standardize Environmental, Social and Governance [ESG] measures for Africa and how professionals could guide businesses to commit and work towards net-zero targets.
- A digitized profession enabled to sustainably transform businesses in Africa, guide evolution in core competencies, customize processes and strike the balance between digitally enabled efficiencies and the capacity to finance people.
- Give an update on the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA) and explore the profession’s strategic role in supporting the successful implementation of the AfCFTA and positioning itself to prepare businesses to maximize the opportunities.
