  • Ronaldo’s Final World Cup Strike Becomes Tournament’s Most Rewatched Goal

Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty against Croatia has emerged as the most rewatched goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, underscoring the enduring power of football’s biggest names to dominate the digital conversation even when their teams fall short on the pitch.

A July 2026 report by a live streaming platform found that Ronaldo’s 68th-minute penalty in Portugal’s 2–1 win over Croatia attracted 988,900 individual views, making it the most watched standalone goal of the tournament so far. More strikingly, the goal has been drawing 10,300 views per hour, the highest hourly replay rate recorded in the study.

The finding is particularly significant because Portugal were eliminated shortly after, turning the goal into what may prove to be Ronaldo’s final strike at a World Cup. That context appears to have deepened the emotional weight of the moment. For fans, the replay is not only about the penalty itself, but about the possibility of witnessing the last World Cup goal from one of football’s most influential figures.

The goal has also performed strongly on social media, with TikTok videos linked to the strike averaging 7.4 million views, while media mentions reached 9.2 million. In a tournament where attention is increasingly shaped by short-form video, viral clips and online debate, Ronaldo’s penalty has become more than a match incident. It has become a digital football memory.

Lionel Messi’s goal against Cabo Verde ranked second, with 709,100 individual goal views and 9,800 views per hour. But while Ronaldo led on replay rate, Messi dominated wider media conversation. His 29th-minute left-footed strike in Argentina’s 3–2 win generated 12 million media mentions, the highest among all goals assessed in the study.

That contrast tells its own story. Ronaldo’s goal was the one fans kept watching. Messi’s goal was the one the football world kept discussing.

Messi’s strike carried the familiar hallmarks of his game: control, timing and left-footed precision. Scored after a long pass and a clean first touch, it quickly became one of the defining technical moments of the tournament. But its media dominance also reflects Messi’s continuing symbolic role in world football. Even when the numbers shift to digital metrics, the Messi-Ronaldo rivalry still shapes how fans, journalists and platforms respond to World Cup moments.

Kylian Mbappé’s 45th-minute goal for France against Sweden placed third, with 344,100 individual views and 2,400 views per hour. The France captain’s goal came earlier in the tournament, giving it more time to accumulate total views, while still maintaining one of the strongest hourly replay rates.

Mbappé’s presence in the top three shows the generational bridge in global football attention. Ronaldo and Messi remain the emotional anchors of the sport’s modern era, but Mbappé continues to command the digital audience of a newer generation of fans.

The most compelling story in the top five, however, may belong to Sidny Lopes Cabral of Cabo Verde. His 103rd-minute equaliser against Argentina ranked fourth, with 231,700 individual views, 3,200 views per hour and 1.2 million TikTok views.

Cabral is the only player in the top five whose goal came in extra time and the only one not attached to a traditional football powerhouse. That made the strike powerful beyond its technical execution. It was the classic World Cup underdog moment: a late goal, against Argentina, by a player from a smaller football nation, in a match that suddenly moved from routine expectation to high drama.

The study’s football analyst captured the pattern clearly, noting that the most rewatched goals tend to arrive when the outcome of a match is at stake. “A penalty that keeps a team alive. An equaliser from an unknown player against a football giant. A moment that shifts the entire mood of a game,” the analyst said.

That observation explains why Cabral’s goal outperformed many strikes from more famous players. The internet does not replay goals only because of who scored them. It replays goals because of what they changed.

Vinícius Júnior completed the top five with his 32nd-minute equaliser for Brazil against Morocco. The goal attracted 736,600 individual views, 1,300 views per hour, 1.9 million average TikTok views and 4.2 million media mentions. Although Brazil were under pressure in the match, Vinícius’ goal helped shift momentum and became one of the most discussed moments of the group stage.

The rest of the top 10 further reinforces the role of drama and timing. Romelu Lukaku’s 86th-minute goal for Belgium against Senegal attracted 4.1 million average TikTok views, even though its individual goal views stood at 123,200. Gabriel Martinelli’s 90+5-minute winner for Brazil against Japan drew 255,200 individual views and 917,000 media mentions. Erling Haaland’s 86th-minute left-footed strike for Norway against Côte d’Ivoire generated 358,700 individual views and 2,100 views per hour.

Mexico’s Julián Quiñones also made the list, with his 9th-minute goal against South Africa recording 912,700 individual views, the second-highest raw view count among the top 10, although its hourly rate was lower at 1,500 views per hour. Gonçalo Ramos’ 90+4-minute header for Portugal against Croatia rounded out the list with 173,600 individual views and 1.1 million media mentions.

The study assessed goals using four main indicators: individual goal views per hour, average TikTok views, media mentions and match highlight viewership. Together, these measures capture not only how many people watched a goal, but how quickly it spread, how strongly it performed on social platforms and how much wider discussion it generated.

The results show that modern football popularity is no longer measured only by stadium reaction or broadcast audience. A goal now lives several lives: the live moment, the official highlight, the TikTok edit, the fan reaction video, the media debate and the endless replay.

In that environment, goals scored by global icons still carry enormous weight. Ronaldo and Messi dominate because their careers give every World Cup moment historical meaning. But the presence of Cabral, Martinelli, Quiñones and others shows that the digital audience also rewards surprise, urgency and emotional disruption.

That may be the most important lesson from the report. Fans are not simply replaying the cleanest finishes. They are replaying moments that changed the story of a match.

Ronaldo’s penalty kept Portugal’s hopes alive. Messi’s strike carried the aura of genius. Cabral’s equaliser turned Cabo Verde into a global talking point. Vinícius’ goal rescued Brazil from pressure. Martinelli’s late winner delivered the sort of stoppage-time drama that short-form platforms are built to amplify.

As the tournament moves deeper into the knockout stages, the ranking may still change. A semifinal winner or final-deciding goal could quickly dominate the replay charts. But for now, Ronaldo’s Croatia penalty stands at the top of the World Cup’s digital memory.

It is a reminder that in football, the most watched goal is not always the most beautiful.

Sometimes, it is the one that feels like an ending.
