Transport Operators announce 30% fare hike effective Thursday

In a joint press release issued on Monday, March 4, the Transport Operators Union and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana announced a substantial 30% increase in transport fares, set to take effect on Thursday, March 7.

The move comes as a response to what they perceive as the government’s inadequate response to their concerns.

Citing relentless spikes in fuel prices as a primary driver behind their decision, the unions emphasized the profound impact these costs have had on their operations and livelihoods.

They underscored the necessity of the fare adjustment for the sustainability of their businesses, stressing the importance of maintaining service quality for the public.

The unions lamented the government’s failure to address their pressing issues effectively, leaving them with little recourse but to resort to fare increments as a means of coping with escalating operational expenses.

They urged the government to initiate constructive dialogue with their leadership to address the sector’s challenges and implement fare adjustments reflective of current economic realities.

“The fare adjustments are essential to ensure the financial viability of the transportation sector and to maintain the quality of service provided to the public.

“The failure of the government to address this critical issue has left us with no choice but to consider fare increments as a means of coping with the escalating operational costs.”

“We are calling on the government and relevant authorities to engage in constructive dialogue with our leaders to address the challenges faced by our sector and to implement fare adjustments that reflect the current economic realities,” read parts of the statement.

The move by the Unios serves as a clarion call for increased engagement between government authorities and industry stakeholders to foster sustainable solutions and mitigate the adverse impacts on both transport operators and commuters alike.
