Scrapping of road and bridge tolls commences today
The Ministry of Roads and Highways has scrapped the collection of road and bridge tolls at the various collection points across the country.
The scrapping of the tolls follows the presentation of the 2022 Budget Statement by the Minister for Finance on November 17, 2021.
“Government has abolished all tolls on public roads and bridges. This takes effect immediately the Budget is approved,” Ken Ofori-Atta said while reading the 2022 budget to Parliament.
Mr Ofori-Atta disclosed that the government will introduce an Electronic Transaction Levy or E-Levy to increase tax revenues for the country, part of which will go into the building of roads and bridges.
The introduction of the E-Levy is occasioned by the surge in mobile money transactions during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.
But few hours after the budget was presented, a press release issued by the Roads and Highways Ministry which norvanreports have obtained a copy states following the announcement by the Finance Minister, the Ministry notes that the scrapping of the toll collection takes effect from 12am Thursday, November 18, 2021.
