- SIC Insurance and ZEN Petroleum Gain as Market Turnover Declines
Trading activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange slowed on Thursday, May 7, 2026, with total market turnover falling to GH¢10.94 million, from the previous session’s GH¢21.64 million, as investors exchanged 1.70 million shares across listed equities, exchange traded funds and the Ghana Alternative Market.
The market’s activity was again dominated by Scancom PLC, MTN Ghana, which traded 1.38 million shares valued at GH¢9.37 million, representing the overwhelming share of the day’s total turnover. The telecoms stock, however, declined by GH¢0.03 to close at GH¢6.77, from GH¢6.80 previously.
The ordinary shares market recorded 1.70 million shares valued at GH¢10.92 million, while the NewGold exchange traded fund added 40 units valued at GH¢19,880.40. The Ghana Alternative Market recorded 400 shares valued at GH¢20, bringing total market value traded to GH¢10.94 million.
Beyond MTN Ghana, notable trades included SIC Insurance Company PLC, which recorded 52,095 shares valued at GH¢309,127.81, and GCB Bank PLC, which traded 5,358 shares for GH¢220,161.85.
Ecobank Transnational Incorporated also saw significant activity, with 92,270 shares valued at GH¢163,508.38, while Enterprise Group PLC recorded 13,862 shares worth GH¢147,638.80. Societe Generale Ghana PLC traded 20,548 shares valued at GH¢131,383.81, and TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana PLC recorded 3,355 shares worth GH¢122,423.95.
Price movements were tilted toward decliners, with only two counters posting gains.
SIC Insurance Company PLC led the gainers, rising by GH¢0.31 to close at GH¢6.03, from GH¢5.72. The move also lifted SIC to a new year high of GH¢6.03. ZEN Petroleum Holdings PLC followed with a gain of GH¢0.14, closing at GH¢6.70, also setting a new year high.
On the losing side, GCB Bank PLC recorded the steepest decline, falling by GH¢1.55 to close at GH¢40.00, from GH¢41.55. Ecobank Transnational Incorporated lost GH¢0.19 to close at GH¢1.77, while Ghana Oil Company PLC declined by GH¢0.03 to GH¢7.98.
MTN Ghana also slipped by GH¢0.03 to GH¢6.77, while Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC fell by GH¢0.02 to GH¢14.97. Cal Bank PLC, Enterprise Group PLC, Republic Bank Ghana PLC and Societe Generale Ghana PLC each lost GH¢0.01.
Several counters closed unchanged, including Access Bank Ghana PLC, Agricultural Development Bank PLC, Atlantic Lithium Limited, Benso Palm Plantation PLC, Ecobank Ghana PLC, Fan Milk PLC, Standard Chartered Bank Ghana PLC, TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana PLC, Tullow Oil PLC and Unilever Ghana PLC.
The session showed that market liquidity remains heavily concentrated in a few large counters. MTN Ghana alone accounted for about GH¢9.37 million of the GH¢10.94 million total market turnover, reinforcing its role as the exchange’s main liquidity anchor.
However, the decline in total turnover, combined with price weakness in selected banking, petroleum and telecom counters, suggests a more cautious trading tone after the stronger activity recorded in the previous session.
The day’s market picture was mixed: turnover remained supported by MTN Ghana, but broader price breadth weakened. Gains in SIC Insurance and ZEN Petroleum offered some support, yet declines in GCB Bank, ETI and MTN Ghana weighed on sentiment.
