Sir Sam Jonah considered as John Mahama’s potential running mate for 2024 elections
Sir Sam Jonah, a Ghanaian business mogul and Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, is being tipped as a potential running mate for John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 Ghanaian presidential elections.
Although Sir Sam is not a card-bearing member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the party founded by the late John Jerry Rawlings, he has been a key advisor to Mahama and has facilitated his international business network.
There is a growing bond between Sir Sam Jonah and John Mahama, with Mahama’s younger brother and businessman, Ibrahim Mahama, playing a role in their relationship. Recently, they were seen together in South Korea, where Jonah introduced Mahama to his network of contacts.
Mahama previously ran for president in 2012 with Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur as his running mate and in 2020 with Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, but was unsuccessful on both occasions.
Sir Sam Jonah has an impressive profile as a businessman. He served as the President of AngloGold Ashanti and transformed the company into a mining multinational. He is currently the Executive Chairman of Jonah Capital, an equity fund based in Johannesburg, South Africa.
He has also held positions on the boards of various companies, including Vodafone, Equator Exploration Ltd, and Range Resources Ltd. Jonah has been recognized for his achievements and received an honorary knighthood from the Prince of Wales in 2003.
While Sir Sam Jonah’s potential nomination as John Mahama’s running mate may not be well-received by some purists within the NDC, his extensive business experience and international connections could be seen as assets for the party’s campaign in the 2024 elections.
