South African FA President Danny Jordaan Arrested on Corruption Charges
South African Football Association (Safa) President Danny Jordaan was arrested on Wednesday over allegations of misusing organizational funds, according to local media reports.
Jordaan, who played a pivotal role in bringing the 2010 World Cup to South Africa, attempted to prevent his arrest on Tuesday. However, the Johannesburg High Court is scheduled to hear his submission only on Thursday.
The arrest follows a police raid on Safa’s offices in March, where authorities alleged that between 2014 and 2018, Jordaan misappropriated resources for personal gain. This includes hiring a private security firm for his protection and engaging a public relations company without the Safa board’s approval.
Jordaan, 73, along with Safa chief financial officer Gronie Hluyo and businessman Trevor Neethling, is set to appear in court later today. While Jordaan denies any wrongdoing in his court affidavit, neither he nor Safa has commented on the situation to Reuters.
