  • Spintex Knights Move Closer To Third Straight Elite 16 After Crushing NPA Pythons

Spintex Knights have moved within touching distance of another Basketball Africa League Elite 16 appearance after defeating Liberia’s NPA Pythons 88-66 in Tripoli, extending an unbeaten start that increasingly looks like evidence of continental progress rather than a temporary run of form.

The Ghanaian champions improved to 2-0 in the West Division preliminary phase following their opening 96-90 victory over Guinea’s Nabaya Sofas. They will conclude their Group B campaign against Benin’s Energie Basketball Club, knowing that another disciplined performance can secure progression and preserve their perfect record.

The 22-point victory over NPA Pythons was significant not simply because of its margin. It was the first time in Spintex Knights’ Road to BAL history that the club had won consecutive matches in the competition, according to FIBA. That milestone points to a team becoming more comfortable with the demands of regional basketball.

Spintex had required resilience and offensive firepower to survive a close contest against Nabaya, winning by six points after scoring 96. Against the Liberian side, they demonstrated a different quality: the capacity to control a game, build separation and protect an advantage without depending entirely on the player who carried the heaviest scoring burden in the opener.

James Amotoe, who delivered 29 points against Nabaya, scored only seven against the Pythons. Yet his influence remained substantial. He added 11 assists and eight rebounds, showing that his value was not limited to shooting. When his scoring opportunities narrowed, he became a facilitator and contributed on the glass.

That adaptability is an encouraging sign for a team with ambitions beyond the preliminary round. Opponents at continental level study leading scorers and attempt to force the ball elsewhere. A side that collapses when its principal scorer has a quieter night is unlikely to survive the increasingly difficult stages of qualification.

Spintex instead found production across its rotation. FIBA reported that Rwandan international Justin Uwitonze came from the bench to score a game-high 24 points, making eight of his 13 three-point attempts. Benjamin Ashitei contributed 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists in 25 minutes, while Malik Temple recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The range of contributions demonstrates why depth matters in tournament basketball. Matches arrive within a compressed schedule, leaving little recovery time. Starters cannot be expected to carry the offensive and defensive load every day, especially when travel, unfamiliar venues and different playing styles place additional pressure on the squad.

Bench scoring gives head coach Selorm Thomas more control over minutes and matchups. It also makes Spintex harder to defend because opponents cannot focus on one creator. The performance against NPA showed that the Knights could receive decisive production from reserves while their regular starters contributed without having to dominate possession.

Thomas has made the larger objective clear: “Our goal this time is to go all the way to the BAL.” That statement reflects the club’s recent history. Spintex first reached the Elite 16 during its debut Road to BAL campaign and returned to the stage the following year, when it advanced to the semifinals before falling short of qualification.

The current campaign is therefore not about celebrating participation. Spintex are attempting to convert repeated appearances into the final breakthrough: becoming the first Ghanaian club to reach the Basketball Africa League itself. Reaching another Elite 16 would confirm consistency, but the club’s progress will ultimately be judged by whether it can cross the final qualifying barrier.

FIBA’s competition structure gives the top two teams in the preliminary group passage to the West Division Elite 16. That stage brings together stronger opposition and offers only two places in the 2027 BAL season. Every preliminary victory matters, but the margin for error becomes smaller once the continental field is reduced.

The immediate task is Energie. Entering the final game with two victories gives Spintex a strong position, but complacency would be dangerous. Tournament standings can be shaped by head-to-head results and points difference, making the manner of performance important even when a team appears well placed.

Spintex must retain the defensive discipline that limited NPA to 66 points while avoiding the passages that allowed Nabaya to score 90. The contrast between those games suggests considerable offensive potential but also identifies the standard required against stronger teams. Championship ambitions cannot depend on winning repeated high-scoring exchanges.

Beyond qualification, the Knights’ run carries importance for Ghanaian basketball. Football dominates the country’s sporting attention and commercial investment, leaving basketball clubs to operate with limited visibility and resources. A Ghanaian team competing successfully across Africa offers sponsors, broadcasters and supporters a reason to view club basketball as a credible sporting product.

Continental performance can also change what young players believe is possible. Benjamin Omari, who added 10 points from the bench, described the victory as a moment of pride for Ghana and said it was for young players who must believe they can compete at that level. His message captures the developmental value of the campaign.

But inspiration must be matched by structure. Ghana needs stronger domestic competitions, reliable facilities, sustained sponsorship and clearer development pathways if Spintex’s success is to produce wider progress. One well-run club can demonstrate possibility; it cannot build an entire basketball ecosystem alone.

The Knights themselves must also manage rising expectations. Consecutive Elite 16 appearances have changed how they are viewed. They are no longer unknown outsiders satisfied to share the court with established teams. Their experience now creates an obligation to compete with greater tactical maturity and emotional control.

The victory over NPA Pythons showed evidence of that evolution: balanced scoring, effective playmaking and a bench capable of deciding the contest. Yet the journey remains unfinished. Energie represents the next examination, followed by a far more demanding Elite 16 if qualification is completed.

Spintex Knights have placed themselves in a strong position and given Ghanaian basketball another continental moment. The decisive question is whether this unbeaten start is merely enough to extend their journey or whether it marks the campaign in which Ghana’s leading club finally reaches the BAL.
