Sports Minister Urges GFA to Seek CAF Inspection of Legon Stadium for Black Stars Matches
In a significant development for Ghanaian football, Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif has directed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to request the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to assess the Legon Stadium as a potential venue for upcoming Black Stars matches. This directive follows CAF’s recent ruling deeming the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi unfit to host international games.
The announcement, made in a statement on Thursday, September 12, comes on the heels of Ghana’s disappointing 1-0 defeat to Angola in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The loss has intensified scrutiny on the country’s football infrastructure, prompting the Sports Ministry to explore alternative venues for the national team.
The Legon Stadium, which underwent renovations to prepare for the 2023 African Games, has already hosted various athletics events and football matches during the competition. Its potential as a suitable venue for the Black Stars is now under consideration.
In addition to the Legon Stadium, the Sports Ministry has also requested CAF to evaluate the Accra Sports Stadium for its capacity to host Category 3 games, which include crucial qualifiers like the 2025 AFCON. The Accra Sports Stadium has recently been active, hosting a series of Category 2 games featuring Ghanaian clubs FC Samartex and Nsoatreman FC in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.
As the GFA prepares to communicate these requests to CAF, the focus remains on ensuring that the Black Stars have a viable home ground as they continue their quest for AFCON glory.
