Standard Chartered Bank building receives Edge Certification
The Standard Chartered Bank Building, easily the most commanding business edifice in the North Ridge quarter of Accra, has received EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) certification for exemplifying achievement in energy savings, water savings and less embodied energy in materials.
Developed by Clubhouse Ghana Limited and managed by Broll Ghana, the Standard Chartered Bank’s head office building towers over the Ako Adjei Interchange on Independence Avenue and sits elegantly on a ground area of 12,924m².
An innovation of IFC (a member of the World Bank Group), EDGE is a certification system that seeks to address the negative impact of buildings on the environment, making it easier to design and certify resource-efficient and zero carbon buildings of every type, everywhere.
The Edge Certification achieved by sustainability in three key areas; direct energy consumption, water consumption and the energy footprint of construction materials. Energy and water-saving technologies are incorporated into buildings, thereby saving resources and limiting carbon emissions. The certification process took into consideration 20% efficiency standards on energy, water and embodied materials to meet the certification requirement for EDGE Standard.
The building’s most pronounced technical solutions are registered in the area of energy and water conservation technologies, with window-to-wall ratio, insulation of roof, insulation of ground/raised floor slab, insulation of exterior walls, efficiency of glass, cooling system efficiency, fresh air pre-conditioning system, efficient lighting for Internal areas, efficient lighting for external areas, lighting controls and smart meters for energy.
Its water-saving system is achieved with the use of water-efficient faucets for all bathrooms, efficient water closets for all bathrooms, and water-efficient faucets for kitchen sinks. The building’s materials scored high marks on account of its bottom floor construction, intermediate floor construction, floor finish, roof construction, exterior walls, interior walls, window frames, window glazing, roof insulation, wall insulation, floor insulation.
Green Buildings are a critical pathway towards accelerating sustainable development globally. “We strongly believe that in developing green and sustainable buildings, our clients are also able to reduce their carbon footprint through conducting their operations in a certified green building”, said George Adjei-Ampofo, Regional Head-West Africa, of Lango Real Estate, following the announcement of the Standard Chartered Building’s EDGE certification.
