Tennis Star Alcaraz Joins Supporters Demanding More from Real Madrid

  • Tennis Star Alcaraz Joins Supporters Demanding More from Real Madrid

Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz has expressed frustration with Real Madrid’s performances, arguing that the team’s collection of elite players has not yet translated into the intensity and collective consistency expected of the club.

The 23-year-old, a lifelong Real Madrid supporter, made the comments in London ahead of the 2026 Laver Cup, where he will represent Team Europe against Team World at the O2 Arena from September 25 to 27.

Alcaraz acknowledged the quality within Madrid’s squad but said other teams were currently performing better. He believes José Mourinho’s side must improve its collective organisation and play with greater urgency.

“I’m suffering right now watching the games because you never know what’s going to happen,” Alcaraz said, adding that the team required “a little bit more intensity”.

His intervention reflects growing unease among Madrid supporters following an inconsistent opening to the season and a 2-1 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the city derby.

Real have continued to collect points in several matches, but questions remain over their control of games, attacking structure and ability to sustain pressure against organised opponents.

Alcaraz’s concern is not that Madrid lack individual talent. The Spanish giants possess some of the most accomplished players in world football. However, their performances have not always reflected the quality available to Mourinho.

Madrid have occasionally looked dangerous in transition, but they have struggled to impose themselves consistently through possession. Their attacking threat can depend heavily on isolated moments of individual quality rather than coordinated movement and a recognisable collective pattern.

Those weaknesses were visible in the derby defeat to Atlético, who controlled important phases of the match and exploited vulnerabilities within Madrid’s defensive structure.

Mourinho defended his players after the loss and pointed to refereeing decisions, including Dean Huijsen’s red card. Critics, however, argued that Atlético were tactically superior and created the better opportunities even before Madrid were reduced to 10 men.

For Alcaraz, uncertainty has become the defining experience of watching the team. Madrid may produce periods of quality but do not always sustain their level throughout a match.

His criticism was therefore less about one defeat and more about the unpredictability of the team’s performances.

Mourinho returned to Madrid with expectations that his tactical discipline and demanding personality would give the team a stronger identity.

The early evidence has been mixed. Madrid have demonstrated resilience and secured victories without always playing convincingly. But defeats against Real Betis and Atlético have exposed problems involving chance conversion, defensive balance and control in midfield.

After the loss to Betis, Mourinho insisted that Madrid had dominated the match and created enough opportunities to win. He argued that the quality of the performance was not reflected in the result.

The challenge is that Madrid are judged not only by their underlying performance but also by results, trophies and the authority with which they impose themselves on opponents.

That standard becomes even more demanding when Barcelona and Atlético appear more settled or cohesive.

Alcaraz’s remarks capture that tension. Madrid’s squad appears strong enough to compete for every major honour, but its performances have not consistently generated the confidence usually associated with a championship-winning team.

The comments came as Alcaraz prepared to return to action at the Laver Cup following a difficult period in his own season.

He recently returned from a wrist injury that kept him away from competitive tennis for almost five months. The Spaniard reached the US Open quarter-finals before losing to American Ben Shelton.

Despite the defeat, his run in New York represented an encouraging return after missing the French Open and Wimbledon because of the injury.

The Laver Cup will give Alcaraz another opportunity to rebuild competitive rhythm as Team Europe seeks victory over Team World in the Ryder Cup-style competition.

His comments about Madrid also reveal the emotional difference between competing and supporting.

On the tennis court, Alcaraz can directly influence the outcome. As a Madrid supporter, he must endure the uncertainty shared by millions of fans watching a talented team without knowing which version will appear.

His message to Madrid was therefore straightforward: individual reputation is not enough. The team must match its talent with intensity, collective clarity and consistent performance.
