  • Trafigura’s $2.8bn bet puts Bogoso-Prestea back

Heath Goldfields has secured a long-term gold offtake agreement with Trafigura that could be worth as much as $2.8bn in a deal that materially strengthens the revival story around Ghana’s historic Bogoso-Prestea mine and opens a new chapter in the country’s push for greater indigenous participation in large-scale mining.

Under the agreement, Trafigura will purchase about 700,000 ounces of gold doré from the Western Region operation and provide $65 million in debt financing to support the restart and ramp-up of oxide ore operations. The structure gives Heath Goldfields both a guaranteed commercial outlet for production and a financing bridge at a moment when execution speed matters as much as geological potential.

At current gold prices, the deal already ranks as one of the more consequential commercial arrangements tied to a Ghanaian mining asset in recent years. At around $3,300 an ounce, the contracted volume implies a gross value above $2.3bn, with upside towards $2.8bn under stronger bullion-price assumptions. That arithmetic matters not only because of the size of the transaction, but also because it shows how sharply global investor and trader interest has shifted in favour of gold assets as price expectations remain bullish.

More importantly, the transaction is a strong endorsement of an asset that many in the market had begun to treat as a distressed legacy mine rather than a viable operating platform. Bogoso-Prestea, one of West Africa’s longest-running gold operations, has produced more than 9m ounces since 1912, but had been effectively dormant for about two years before Heath Goldfields acquired it in September 2024 and restarted production. The company completed its first gold pour in February 2026, a milestone that helped reframe the mine from a turnaround story to active producer.

Trafigura’s entry increases the stakes further. The commodities trader said this is its first gold transaction in Ghana and only its second gold deal in Africa, making the agreement notable not merely as a financing package but as a strategic expansion into a market it had not previously entered in this way. For Ghana, that carries symbolic weight: one of the world’s largest commodity merchants is effectively betting that a Ghanaian-owned operator can restore value from a complex, historic mine and deliver saleable output at scale.

Neither side misses that symbolism. Trafigura described Bogoso-Prestea as “a producing asset with a strong operational team and LBMA compliance”, adding that it looked forward to applying its trading expertise and market access in support of “a Ghanaian-owned operation of this quality”. Heath Goldfields, for its part, cast the agreement as more than a financing event, framing it as evidence that global counterparties are prepared to back indigenous mining ownership when the operating case is credible.

The broader significance lies in what the deal says about capital formation in African mining. Often, the constraint is not the absence of mineral endowment but the absence of commercially structured pathways from asset transfer to stable production. An offtake-backed financing arrangement helps close that gap. It reduces marketing uncertainty, strengthens liquidity, and provides the operator room to push ahead with operational rehabilitation without relying solely on equity injections or slower-moving traditional lending. The inference is that Bogoso-Prestea’s recovery is now less speculative and more financeable. That is an inference supported by the structure of the transaction itself.

There is also a domestic political economy angle. Ghana has recently shown growing interest in ensuring that more value from its gold sector is retained locally, whether through higher fiscal returns, stronger supply-chain participation, or wider indigenous ownership. This deal fits neatly into that evolving narrative. Reuters noted that it aligns with Ghana’s broader push for increased state revenue and deeper local participation in mining, suggesting that the commercial success of Bogoso-Prestea may be watched as closely in policy circles as it is in the bullion market.

For the communities around the mine, the restart has already had some practical impact. Reports tied to the company’s operational revival point to more than 1,400 direct and indirect jobs and the engagement of more than 15 local contractors since operations resumed, indicating that the project’s significance extends beyond ounces and cash flows into employment, services demand and local procurement.

Even so, the direction of travel is now clearer. What looked until recently like a difficult rehabilitation project is increasingly being recast as one of the most significant indigenous mining turnarounds in Ghana’s recent history. And with gold prices still near record highs, the timing could hardly be more consequential.

In that sense, the Trafigura agreement is not just a commercial milestone for Heath Goldfields. It is a statement about where confidence is beginning to flow in Ghana’s mining industry: towards assets that combine historic scale, local ownership and the promise of disciplined operational recovery.
