  • Tyson Fury Vows to ‘Blast Out’ Anthony Joshua in Cardiff Showdown

Tyson Fury has promised to abandon caution and pursue a decisive stoppage when he faces Anthony Joshua in their long-awaited heavyweight contest at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on December 11.

The two former world champions appeared together at the first press conference since their bout was formally announced, bringing them face to face after almost 15 years of rivalry, failed negotiations and speculation.

“We’re here to fight, and fight we will,” Fury said. “I look forward to the challenge. I tell you what I’m going to do: I’m going to come out and blast him out.”

The all-British encounter, billed as the “Battle of Britain”, will be streamed globally on Netflix and is expected to draw close to the Principality Stadium’s maximum 80,000 capacity.

Fury is widely considered the more adaptable boxer, possessing the movement and ring intelligence to fight at distance or pressure opponents at close range.

Against Joshua, however, the 38-year-old says he intends to force a physical contest.

“I ain’t gonna run away, I’m not gonna box, I’m gonna throw down,” Fury said. “From what I’m seeing, I’m going to catch him, and when I do, it’s going to be curtains.”

It is a strategy Fury has employed before. In his second fight against Deontay Wilder in 2020, he abandoned the defensive approach used in their first encounter and pressed the American from the opening bell, eventually forcing a seventh-round stoppage.

Applying similar pressure could prevent Joshua from controlling the fight behind his jab and setting his feet for combinations.

It would also carry significant risk. Joshua remains one of the heavyweight division’s most powerful punchers, with 27 knockouts from 30 victories.

A close-range exchange may reduce Fury’s technical advantages and give Joshua the type of direct target on which he has built much of his career.

Fury also mocked Joshua’s recent “landlord” nickname and the promotional language used by Eddie Hearn.

“In the build-up to this fight, Eddie and AJ were talking about landlords, being the boss, the rent man and all that,” Fury said.

“I only see one don, and that’s Fury. Now you’ve come to get the rent and I ain’t paying because I’m number one.”

The theatrical exchange marked a shift from the otherwise respectful tone surrounding the contest. Fury praised Joshua’s achievements and acknowledged that both men had defined British heavyweight boxing during the past decade.

Fury and Joshua held versions of the world heavyweight title at the same time but never reached an agreement to contest an undisputed championship.

Both were later defeated by Oleksandr Usyk, whose rise ended the possibility of their meeting while each remained unbeaten and held competing world titles.

They will now fight for the vacant WBA “Super” heavyweight title after Usyk relinquished the belt in June.

The fight arrives later than boxing supporters once expected.

Fury is 38, while Joshua is 36. Both have suffered defeats, changed trainers and experienced periods when retirement appeared possible.

Fury enters the contest with a professional record of 36 victories, two defeats and one draw. Joshua has recorded 30 victories against four losses.

Fury recently returned from another retirement to defeat Mariusz Wach, while Joshua knocked out Kristian Prenga in July as he rebuilt following earlier setbacks.

The bout may therefore determine not only the leading British heavyweight of their generation but also which fighter retains a credible route towards another period at the top of the division.

For Joshua, victory would reverse years of public comparison with Fury and restore his status as a major heavyweight force. For Fury, defeating Joshua would support his claim that he was always the superior fighter, even though the contest failed to happen when both held world titles.

The fight will take place at the Principality Stadium after Joshua’s camp pushed for the event to remain in Britain rather than move to New York or Saudi Arabia.

Joshua reportedly accepted a substantial reduction in his potential earnings to secure a British venue.

“To keep it in the UK, he’s got to turn down eight figures plus,” Hearn said, adding that Joshua ultimately decided: “We’ll do it in the UK.”

Cardiff authorities expect the contest to attract international visitors, support local businesses and showcase the Welsh capital to Netflix’s global audience.

But the central attraction will remain the contrast inside the ring: Fury’s size, movement and tactical adaptability against Joshua’s power, combination punching and disciplined athleticism.

Fury says he will remove the tactical uncertainty by making the fight immediate and violent.

Whether that prediction becomes the contest’s defining strategy or merely part of the promotion will be established when two of British boxing’s biggest names finally share a professional ring on December 11.
