IMF Begins Preliminary Talks with Kenya on Possible Fund-supported Programme

An International Monetary Fund (IMF) staff mission, led by Haimanot Teferra, Mission Chief for Kenya, will arrive in Nairobi from September 25 to October 9 to open discussions with the government on a potential IMF-supported programme.

The visit, according to the Fund, follows a request from the Kenyan authorities.

“At the request of the Kenyan authorities, an IMF staff team will begin initial discussions in the coming days on a possible Fund-supported program,” Ms Teferra said in a statement ahead of the mission.

She reiterated the IMF’s commitment to Kenya, stressing that the Fund will continue to support the country’s efforts to maintain macroeconomic stability, safeguard debt sustainability, strengthen governance, and foster inclusive and sustainable growth.

“We look forward to constructive engagement with the authorities and other stakeholders during our visit to Nairobi,” she added.

Kenya, grappling with tight fiscal conditions and rising debt obligations, has in recent years relied on multilateral support to ease financing pressures while implementing structural reforms.
