Prof. Kwame Akyeampong Appointed Senior Fellow at CDD-Ghana
The Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has announced the appointment of Professor Kwame Akyeampong as a Senior Fellow of the Center, effective April 1, 2025.
A globally respected academic, Prof. Akyeampong is a Professor of International Education and Development whose career spans over three decades. He began his academic journey in 1989 at the University of Cape Coast, eventually rising to become Director of the Institute of Education in 2003. In 2004, he joined the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom, and in 2020, moved to the Open University, UK, where he established the Centre for the Study of Global Development (CSGD).
Throughout his career, Prof. Akyeampong has held several international appointments, including Visiting Professor at the Centre for the Study of International Co-operation in Education (CICE) at Hiroshima University, Japan; Senior Fulbright Research Scholar at Georgia State University, USA; and Senior Policy Analyst with UNESCO in Paris between 2010 and 2013.
He currently co-chairs the Global Education Evidence Advisory Panel (GEEAP) and serves on the boards of Luminos Fund Foundation and Teaching at the Right Level (TARL) Africa. He is also a Chen Yidan Visiting Global Fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a 2024 Richard von Weizsäcker Fellow at the Robert Bosch Academy in Berlin.

His extensive work in international education, particularly in Africa, has significantly shaped policy and practice. The Center is privileged to have him on board,” said Professor H. Kwasi Prempeh, Executive Director of CDD-Ghana, in a statement announcing the appointment.
“We believe that his expertise and depth of knowledge will contribute meaningfully toward national policy dialogues and outcomes in the area of education and related social policy fields,” he added.
Prof. Akyeampong’s research interests focus on teacher education and educational interventions across several African countries. His forthcoming book, Reconceptualizing the Learning Crisis: Multidimensional Pedagogies of African Accelerated Learning Programs, is expected to be published in June 2025.
With this appointment, CDD-Ghana now has three Senior Fellows. The other two are Ambassador Francis Tsegah, a retired diplomat and former Ambassador of Ghana to Spain, and Professor Takyiwaa Manuh, an Emerita Professor of African Studies at the University of Ghana and a leading scholar on African development, women’s rights, and migration.
The role of Senior Fellow at CDD-Ghana is conferred on individuals with exceptional careers in public service, academia, professional practice, or the private sector, who align with the Center’s values and mission.
