VRA demands 37% tariff increment in power generation charge to electricity distribution companies
Power generation company, the Volta River Authority (VRA), is demand a 37 percentage points increment in bulk electricity generation charge (BGC) from electricity distribution companies in the country.
The company’s tariff proposal submitted to the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) requests that the PURC increase VRA’s BGC from the existing average charge of GHp 28.22/kWh to GHp 38.68/kWh – reflecting the 37% increment demand by the VRA.
According to the VRA tariff requests to the electricity distribution companies such as the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) and Enclave Power Companies (EPC) as follows:
ECG – GHp 33.66/kWh
NEDCo – GHp 49.52/kWh
EPCL – GHp 53.90/kWh
The VRA is of the view that, the proposed tariff will help it recover cost of power generation to aforementioned power distribution companies.
The rationale/objectives of VRA’s increased tariff proposal include:
- To recover cost of power supply to the DISCos and ensure the sustainability of VRA.
- To recover cost of transmission losses.
- To recover net cost of inadvertent power imports.
- To recover cost of ancillary services to the National Interconnected Transmission System.
- To recover any additional cost borne by VRA to ensure grid stability and uninterrupted power supply in the nation.
