Wilmar Africa Commemorates Menstrual Hygiene Day with 4,000 Schoolgirls
Wilmar Africa, a key player in the production of household essentials including Jamaa soap and washing powders, has actively participated in this year’s Menstrual Hygiene Day. Collaborating with the NGO Inspire Today, the company supported over 4,000 menstruating girls within the Weija Gbawe Municipal Education directorate, reaching students across eight different schools.
The company, which is a subsidiary of the global Wilmar International, provided various soap products to encourage good hygiene practices among the students during their menstrual periods. Ewuraba Adusei, Wilmar Africa’s Head of Marketing, emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting community health and education. “It’s crucial for us to help our girls maintain cleanliness and confidence during their menstrual cycles. We believe in empowering them to continue their education without interruption,” said Adusei.
The partnership aligns with Wilmar Africa’s broader goals of contributing to community development and supporting educational initiatives, particularly in promoting gender equality in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5.
Etornam Sey, the Founder and Executive Director of Inspire Today, praised Wilmar Africa for its sustained support over the past five years, which has been pivotal in maintaining menstrual hygiene among the schoolgirls. “The backing of corporations like Wilmar is indispensable in our efforts to ensure every girl has the dignity of a clean and hygienic menstruation experience, irrespective of their economic or geographical constraints,” Sey stated.
Menstrual Hygiene Day, which takes place on May 28 each year, was established by the German NGO WASH United in 2014. The day is dedicated to raising awareness and combating the global challenges associated with menstrual hygiene. This year’s theme, “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld,” aims to create a world where menstrual stigma is eradicated and all individuals have access to necessary products and period-friendly education.
Wilmar Africa’s involvement in this initiative is a testament to the company’s commitment to not only business excellence but also to making a significant impact on the health and education of young women in Ghana.
