‘Win AFCON or reimburse the money invested in you’ – Guinea President warns national team
Guinea president Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya has told the country’s Africa Cup of Nations squad to either win the tournament or bring back the money spent in preparing for it.
Guinea are in Group B of the continental showpiece alongside Zimbabwe, Senegal and Malawi.
However, President Colonel Mamady Doumbouya has tasked the team to win the cup or risk reimbursing every money invested in them.
“The cup, or you reimburse the money that’s been invested in you,” the Guinean President told the players, as quoted by African Insider.
The Guinean national team are heading to the tournament full of optimism as captain of the side, Naby Keita collected the flag from Doumbouya.
Guinea are yet to win the AFCON title with their best performance coming in the 1976 Nations Cup when they lost to Morocco at the finals.
Guinea has since reached the quarter-finals in four recent editions; 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2015.
Guinea kick start their quest for a maiden AFCON title against Malawi on January 10.
