- World Cup All-Time Top Scorer Mbappe Wins Second Golden Boot Despite France’s Third-Place Finish
Kylian Mbappe etched another remarkable chapter into football history on Saturday by becoming the FIFA World Cup’s all-time leading scorer and clinching his second Golden Boot after inspiring France in a dramatic third-place play-off against England.
Although Les Bleus suffered a thrilling 6-4 defeat in Miami, Mbappe stole the headlines with a brilliant brace that took his World Cup tally to an unprecedented 22 goals, surpassing Lionel Messi’s previous record of 21. The Real Madrid superstar also finished the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the tournament’s leading scorer with 10 goals, securing his second Golden Boot after first claiming the award at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Messi, who entered Sunday’s final against Spain with eight goals, was unable to find the net as Argentina lost the World Cup final. The Argentine captain therefore remained on 21 career World Cup goals, allowing Mbappe’s record to stand while also confirming the French forward as the winner of the tournament’s Golden Boot.
The achievement further cements Mbappe’s place among football’s greatest players, with the 27-year-old rewriting the World Cup record books in just three tournaments.
Mbappe’s latest Golden Boot came after another devastating tournament in front of goal.
He finished the competition with 10 goals, adding to the eight he scored at Qatar 2022 and the four he netted during France’s victorious 2018 campaign in Russia. His 22 World Cup goals have come in just 22 appearances—an extraordinary strike rate of one goal per match.
The Frenchman’s World Cup journey has been nothing short of spectacular. As a 19-year-old, he announced himself to the world by scoring four goals, including one in France’s 4-2 victory over Croatia in the 2018 final, becoming the first teenager since Pelé to score in a World Cup final.
Four years later in Qatar, Mbappe produced one of the greatest individual performances in World Cup history. He scored eight goals, including a stunning hat-trick against Argentina in an unforgettable final that ended 3-3 before France lost on penalties. Despite the heartbreak, he claimed his first Golden Boot and became only the second player ever to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final.
His exploits in North America have now elevated him to even greater heights.
Despite breaking the all-time scoring record, Mbappe admitted the personal milestone could not erase the disappointment of missing out on a second consecutive World Cup final.
“I would have preferred not to be the all-time top scorer and to be playing tomorrow’s match,” Mbappe said after the game.
“It’s good in terms of legacy, but today it’s not the first thing on my mind.”
Before the final, Mbappe had predicted that Messi would probably score against Spain as both players battled for the Golden Boot. However, the Argentine legend was kept off the scoresheet in what is expected to be his final World Cup appearance, leaving Mbappe’s 10-goal tally untouched and confirming the French captain as the tournament’s leading scorer.
Mbappe’s achievement is even more remarkable considering he has reached the milestone before turning 28.
With three outstanding World Cup campaigns already behind him, the French forward has won the World Cup once, finished runner-up once, claimed two Golden Boots and now owns the record for the most goals in the tournament’s history.
Having surpassed legends such as Lionel Messi, Miroslav Klose, Ronaldo Nazário, Gerd Müller and Pelé, Mbappe has established himself as the greatest goalscorer the FIFA World Cup has ever seen.
While France’s dream of lifting a third World Cup title ended in the semi-finals, Mbappe ensured his name would once again dominate the history books, leaving North America as the tournament’s Golden Boot winner and the new all-time leading scorer on football’s biggest stage.
