- World Cup Costs Soar as Tickets, Hotels and Transport Stretch Supporters’ Budgets
Fans planning to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup may need deeper pockets than ever before, as soaring ticket prices, expensive transport, rising hotel rates and additional matchday costs threaten to make the tournament the costliest World Cup ever staged.
The expanded tournament, to be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico, is already generating huge excitement ahead of its June 11 kick-off. But financial concerns are quickly becoming one of the biggest talking points among supporters preparing to travel across North America.
According to reports by The Athletic and other international outlets, fans attending the tournament could spend anything from a few hundred dollars for a basic matchday experience to more than $10,000 for premium packages and final tickets.
Ticket prices alone have already surpassed previous World Cup records.
FIFA’s Category 1 group-stage tickets are selling for between $345 and $805 in several host cities, while knockout-stage matches are priced significantly higher.
The final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey has Category 1 seats priced at more than $6,300, with some premium front-row packages reportedly reaching nearly $33,000.
Even lower-tier tickets are becoming difficult for ordinary fans to afford.
Category 3 group-stage seats range from about $140 to $215 in most venues, while limited Category 4 tickets start at around $60 but are expected to be extremely scarce.
The tournament’s dynamic pricing system has also drawn criticism from supporters.
FIFA has continued adjusting ticket prices based on demand, causing costs to rise steadily during the sales process. Reports indicate that prices increased in at least one ticket category for more than 90 of the tournament’s 104 matches.
Transport expenses are also expected to stretch supporters’ budgets.
Fans travelling to matches in New York and New Jersey could pay as much as $98 for special round-trip train services to MetLife Stadium, while shuttle buses are being offered at around $20.
Parking passes near stadiums are also being sold for between $100 and $300, adding another layer of cost for supporters attending matches by car.
Flights will represent another major expense, especially for fans travelling from outside North America.
Round-trip flights to the United States during the tournament period are projected to cost close to $2,000 from some international destinations.
Accommodation prices have also surged around host cities.
Hotel rates on matchdays are reportedly about 55 per cent higher than normal summer prices. In some cities, including Kansas City and Guadalajara, hotel costs have doubled during World Cup fixtures due to high demand and limited availability.
Some hotel rooms in major cities are already being listed at extraordinary prices.
Reports suggest that rooms in Mexico City that usually cost less than $200 per night have climbed into the thousands during opening-week matches.
Inside stadiums, fans should also prepare for expensive food and drinks.
During recent FIFA events in the United States, supporters paid around $14 for beers, $19 for meals such as chicken tenders and more than $30 for premium food items. Similar prices are expected during the World Cup.
International supporters may also face visa-related expenses.
Fans requiring entry visas into the United States may have to pay application fees of about $185 before finalising travel arrangements.
Despite the rising costs, millions of football fans are still expected to travel across North America for the first-ever 48-team World Cup.
Some supporters are already searching for cheaper alternatives, including shared accommodation, budget motels and staying far from city centres to reduce expenses.
With 104 matches spread across 16 host cities, the 2026 FIFA World Cup promises to be the biggest tournament in football history.
But for many fans, it may also become the hardest one financially to experience in person.
The tournament will test not only national teams on the pitch, but also the spending power of supporters off it.
