- Yamal Says Spain Have the Style and Mentality to Conquer World Cup
Lamine Yamal has backed Spain to challenge for the 2026 FIFA World Cup title, insisting La Roja play “the best football” in the world as the Barcelona teenager prepares for his first appearance at the tournament. The 18-year-old winger, already regarded as one of the brightest talents in global football, said Spain have the quality, identity and mentality to compete with the world’s strongest national teams when the tournament begins in North America.
The 2026 World Cup will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico, with Spain expected to enter the competition as one of the major contenders after rebuilding strongly under Luis de la Fuente.
Yamal said the World Cup has always carried a special meaning for him because of the way it brings countries and communities together.
“Ever since I was a kid, it’s the one tournament everyone watches,” he said. “Even people who don’t usually follow football come together when their country is playing. Just thinking about being part of it gives me goosebumps.”
The Barcelona forward is currently working his way back from injury ahead of the tournament, with reports in Spain indicating that he is being carefully managed to ensure he is ready for Spain’s campaign. Spain are scheduled to begin their World Cup campaign against Cape Verde on June 15, before facing Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in the group stage.
Despite the intense expectations surrounding him, Yamal said he feels little fear on the football pitch because the game remains the most natural part of his life.
“I’d probably be nervous doing something unfamiliar, but football is my life,” he said. “When I see my parents in the stands and know they’re proud of me, it takes the pressure away.”
Yamal has quickly become a symbol of Spain’s new generation, combining fearless dribbling, creativity and composure with a maturity rarely associated with a player still in his teenage years.
He acknowledged that several countries will arrive at the World Cup with strong squads, but said Spain’s belief in their playing identity could prove decisive.
“There are many strong teams like Argentina, France, Portugal and England,” Yamal said. “But we trust the way we play because, in my opinion, we play the best football.”
That confidence reflects Spain’s renewed faith in a possession-based, technically refined game model built around academy-trained players comfortable under pressure.
“Spanish academies are the best in the world,” Yamal added. “You can see it in the way our teams play. Of course, the World Cup is about winning, but we believe in our football and it’s working for us.”
His rise has inevitably brought comparisons with some of the defining figures of the modern era, including Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappé and Neymar. But Yamal said his ambition is not to copy them, but to build a career worthy of being discussed in the same company.
“My goal is not to be compared to them,” he said. “I want my name to be mentioned alongside theirs.”
He also admitted that criticism continues to motivate him.
“When you break through at a young age, people always doubt you,” he said. “Some think you’ll only shine for one season or say you’re overrated. I like proving people wrong.”
Spain will enter the tournament with high expectations, but former striker Fernando Morientes has cautioned against placing too much pressure on Yamal, warning that the teenager should not be expected to carry the national team alone.
For Yamal, however, the dream remains clear: to help Spain lift the World Cup and return home to celebrate with supporters.
“The referee blows the final whistle and we’re champions,” he said. “Then we return to Spain and celebrate with the fans. That would be unforgettable.”
For Spain, Yamal represents more than youthful promise. He is the face of a new generation trying to restore the country to the summit of world football. For the teenager himself, the World Cup offers the biggest stage yet to prove that his rise is not simply a story of potential, but the beginning of a defining career.
