- 2026 FIFA World Cup: Vinicius Rescues Brazil as Morocco Earn Historic Point
Brazil were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Morocco in a thrilling Group C clash at the FIFA World Cup 2026 in New York New Jersey, as Vinicius Jr cancelled out an early strike from Ismael Saibari in a contest packed with quality and intensity.
The five-time world champions entered the tournament opener as favourites, but Morocco once again proved why they are regarded among the world’s elite after their historic semi-final run at Qatar 2022.
Morocco shocked the Seleção in the 21st minute with a beautifully-crafted attacking move. Brahim Diaz unlocked the Brazilian defence with a perfectly-weighted through pass, sending Saibari racing clear before the midfielder calmly lifted the ball over advancing goalkeeper Alisson to spark wild celebrations among the Moroccan supporters.
Brazil, however, responded with moments of brilliance from one of their biggest stars. Vinicius Jr restored parity in the 32nd minute after receiving a pass from Bruno Guimaraes on the left side of the penalty area. The Real Madrid winger cut inside before unleashing a thunderous right-footed strike that flew past helpless Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.
The equaliser shifted momentum towards Brazil, who pushed hard for a second goal before half-time. Lucas Paqueta came close with an acrobatic effort, but Bounou reacted brilliantly to dive low and keep the scores level.
The second half continued at a high tempo, with both teams creating chances in an entertaining encounter. Vinicius Jr remained Brazil’s main attacking threat and nearly turned provider after cutting the ball back for Raphinha, only for Bounou to once again produce a crucial save.
Morocco also threatened late on and nearly snatched victory in stoppage time. Neil El Aynaoui tested Alisson from long range before the Brazilian goalkeeper reacted sharply to deny Ayoube Amaimouni on the rebound.
The draw leaves both sides with one point in Group C, which also features Scotland and Haiti, who are yet to play.
Despite Brazil failing to secure victory, Vinicius Jr’s performance earned him the Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match award. Interestingly, it was the first time the forward had scored for Brazil without the Seleção going on to win, ending a streak of eight previous victories when he found the net.
