BudgIT Ghana urges Government to build a robust primary healthcare system to tackle future pandemics
Civil Society Organisation (CSO) BudgIT Ghana, has called on Government to build a robust primary healthcare system to better manage and minimise the impacts of future pandemics on the country.
The call by BudgIT Ghana is premised on the novel Covid-19 crisis that rocked and nearly overwhelmed the country’s healthcare system and adversely impacted the economy.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ forum on healthcare themed, “Setting the Agenda for Robust Primary Healthcare in Ghana”, on Friday, August 25, 2023, Country Lead for BudgIT Ghana, Felix Ankrah, noted the COVID-19 crisis exposed the lapses in primary healthcare infrastructures globally.
These lapses, he averred, created an opportunity for most countries to revisit their structures on various health centers with the motive of fortifying primary healthcare to effectively tackle any potential future pandemics.
According to Mr Ankrah, BudgIT Ghana’s call for a robust primary healthcare system aligns with global efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructures, ensuring they are well-equipped to handle both routine healthcare needs and unforeseen health crises.
Although the UN World Health Organization (WHO) declared “with great hope” an end to COVID-19 as a public health emergency, it does not mean the disease is no longer a global threat.
In view of that, BudgIT Ghana has pledged to continue its call for a robust healthcare system that will lead to the elimination of the current lapses in Ghana’s primary healthcare system for the benefit of the citizenry.
The stakeholders’ forum on healthcare systems in Ghana organised by BudgIT Ghana, forms part of the ongoing Phase III of the COVID-19 Transparency and Accountability Project (CTAP).
The CTAP is committed to tracking all resources from the public sector, private, multilateral, and bilateral donors committed to fighting the pandemic.
The CTAP also focuses on strengthening institutional and stakeholder engagement for health sector accountability and transparency.
BudgIT Ghana is a civic organization that applies technology to ensure transparency and accountability while intersecting citizen engagement with institutional improvement to facilitate societal change.
