Ghana Hotels Association Urges Inclusive Utilisation of 1% Tourism Development Fund
The immediate past President of the Ghana Hotels Association, Edward Ackah Nyamike Jnr, has called on the newly inaugurated national executives of the Association to prioritise a transparent and inclusive disbursement of the 1 percent Tourism Development Fund set up by the Ghana Tourism Authority.
The Fund is intended to finance the Authority’s tourism development programmes as well as initiatives aimed at strengthening Ghana’s hospitality and tourism value chain.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the Association’s national officers in Accra on Thursday, April 23, 2026, Dr. Nyamike Jnr underscored the importance of efficiently utilising the Fund to support the sector’s recovery from recent economic pressures while positioning it for sustainable growth.
“In doing so, kindly permit me to bring a few things to the attention of my successor, Victor Opoku Minta, and his team. Continue the campaign for the mandatory membership of all hotels with hotel associations.
Continue the advocacy for a more transparent and inclusive disbursement of the 1% Tourism Development Fund,” he stated.
Dr. Nyamike Jnr also called for renewed commitment towards operationalising the Public-Private Partnership Forum as outlined in the Tourism Act 817.
The legislation requires the sector minister, together with the Authority and private sector stakeholders, to hold quarterly engagements to address challenges within the tourism industry.
Meanwhile, the newly elected President of the Ghana Hotels Association, Victor Opoku Minta, has disclosed plans to establish a credit union to improve access to finance for member hotels and their staff.
He explained that limited access to affordable credit remains a significant challenge in the hospitality sector, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises that often struggle to secure funding from traditional financial institutions.
“This year we will launch the National GHA Credit Union to financially empower our member hotels and staff and to support the growth of our businesses,” he said.
Mr. Minta added that the proposed credit union will function as a financial support platform, enabling members to access relatively affordable loans to upgrade facilities, expand operations, and enhance service delivery.
