- Ghana, Nigeria, Togo and Burkina Faso Drawn Together in Blockbuster WAFU B U-20 Championship Group
Ghana’s quest to qualify for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations will begin with a series of high-stakes regional derbies after the Black Satellites were drawn alongside Nigeria, Togo and Burkina Faso in a formidable Group B of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship.
The draw, conducted on Wednesday at the headquarters of the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, has produced what many are already describing as the tournament’s “group of death”, with four nations boasting rich traditions in youth football set to battle for qualification to the continental finals.
For Ghana, the draw sets up another chapter in one of African football’s fiercest rivalries, with a meeting against Nigeria expected to headline the group stage. The Black Satellites will also face two familiar regional opponents in Togo and Burkina Faso, both of whom have consistently produced talented young players capable of challenging the continent’s traditional powers.
The WAFU B Championship serves as the qualifying competition for the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, which Ghana will host during the country’s 70th anniversary of independence celebrations. Hosting the continental tournament automatically places Ghana at the centre of African youth football, but the Black Satellites remain determined to earn their place through a strong qualifying campaign.
Group A features hosts Côte d’Ivoire, Benin and Niger, with the seven member associations of WAFU B competing for the available qualification places at the continental championship.
The Black Satellites enter the competition carrying one of the strongest pedigrees in African youth football. Ghana have won the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations four times and remain the only African nation to have lifted the FIFA U-20 World Cup, achieving the historic feat in Egypt in 2009 after defeating Brazil on penalties.
Nigeria, meanwhile, are one of Africa’s most successful youth football nations, having won the U-20 AFCON multiple times and finished runners-up at the FIFA U-20 World Cup on two occasions. Their meetings with Ghana at youth level have produced memorable contests over the years, adding further intrigue to the upcoming encounter.
Burkina Faso have also become a growing force in youth football over the past decade, regularly challenging for continental honours, while Togo will be aiming to upset the established order with a talented new generation eager to make its mark.
Beyond the regional bragging rights, the championship represents an important pathway for the development of young players. The tournament has traditionally served as a launchpad for many of West Africa’s biggest stars, with outstanding performances often attracting the attention of scouts from clubs across Africa and Europe.
The Ghana Football Association believes the Black Satellites have the quality to navigate the difficult group despite the calibre of opposition.
The qualifying tournament is expected to showcase some of the brightest emerging talents from the region, with every match carrying added significance as teams compete for a place at the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations on Ghanaian soil.
