Ghana to Open Trade Office in China as Bilateral Ties Deepen
Ghana is set to establish a new Trade Office in Nanjing, Shandong Province, China, later this year, the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has announced. The move forms part of Ghana’s strategy to expand trade and investment cooperation with China.
Minister Ofosu-Adjare disclosed the development during a farewell meeting with the Outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, at her Accra office on Thursday. She emphasized that the initiative aims to promote stronger bilateral trade ties and attract greater Chinese investment into Ghana.
“We are ready to sign the Zero-Tariff Agreement with China, and we appreciate Ambassador Tong Defa for his close engagement with our Ministry during his tenure,” she said.
The Minister further highlighted that trading in local currencies between the two countries has commenced. “If we are able to trade in our own currencies, Ghana’s currency will be strengthened, because the bulk of our trading goes to China,” she noted.
Hon. Ofosu-Adjare commended the Ambassador for his dedication to fostering Chinese investment in Ghana and wished him success in his future endeavours, expressing optimism that Ghana–China relations will continue to strengthen.
In response, Ambassador Tong Defa lauded the Minister’s efforts in deepening bilateral cooperation, revealing that more Chinese companies are eager to invest in Ghana. He also expressed confidence that Ghana’s exports to China would increase under the current administration.
“I am happy that Chinese businesses are doing very well under President Mahama,” he remarked.
