Gov’t Launches One Million Coders Programme to Drive Digital Transformation and Job Creation

The Government of Ghana has officially launched the One Million Coders Programme, a bold and transformative national initiative aimed at equipping one million Ghanaians with practical coding and digital skills to accelerate innovation, job creation, and inclusive economic growth.

The programme was launched on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at a national event held in Accra, with simultaneous engagements across satellite centres nationwide. The ceremony brought together key stakeholders from the public and private sectors, including representatives from the technology ecosystem, development agencies, and academia.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister for Communications, Digital Innovation and Technologies, Sam Nartey George, described the initiative as a crucial pillar in Ghana’s journey toward becoming a digital-first economy.

“We are at a defining moment in Ghana’s digital journey. A moment that is not only necessary but urgent. This is a call to action to transform our economy, create sustainable jobs, and invest boldly in our people,” said the Minister.

He added: “We must harness Science, Innovation and Technology, not as nice words but as tools for inclusive growth, and the One Million Coders Programme is designed to do just that.”

The programme is expected to build a critical mass of digital talent in areas such as software development, artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies. It also seeks to bridge the digital divide, particularly among youth and women, by offering accessible and industry-relevant training that aligns with global digital trends.

Stakeholders have hailed the programme as a timely intervention to address the growing demand for tech skills across sectors and boost Ghana’s competitiveness in the digital economy.

The One Million Coders Programme is expected to run in phases, with partnerships being forged with tech hubs, universities, innovation centres, and international organisations to ensure wide-scale impact and sustainability.

According to the Ministry, the programme will also support startup incubation and career development pathways for participants, ultimately positioning Ghana as a talent hub for digital innovation on the African continent.
