Gov’t Submits Extradition Request to U.S. for Ken Ofori-Atta, Ernest Akore Over Corruption Charges
The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dominic Ayine, has announced that government has formally submitted an extradition request to United States authorities for former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, and Ernest Darko Akore to face corruption-related charges brought by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
Speaking on Thursday, December 18, at the Government Accountability Series, Mr. Ayine said the request was transmitted after his office received and reviewed all the requisite documentation and clarifications from the OSP.
According to him, the two individuals are expected to answer to a total of 78 alleged corruption and corruption-related offences.
“This step was taken after my office received the necessary documentation and clarifications from the Office of the Special Prosecutor,” the Attorney-General stated, adding that his office has completed its role in the process by formally forwarding the extradition request to U.S. authorities.
He explained that the matter is now subject to the determination of the United States judicial system, which will assess whether the legal threshold for extradition has been satisfied under applicable laws.
“It is now in the hands of the U.S. judicial authorities to ascertain whether the threshold for extradition has been met,” Mr. Ayine said.
The Attorney-General reaffirmed government’s commitment to accountability, the rule of law and due process, stressing that Ghana will continue to cooperate fully with international partners while respecting the legal frameworks governing extradition under both Ghanaian and U.S. law.
He assured the public that his office remains guided by legal principles and institutional procedures in handling the matter, as efforts to strengthen anti-corruption enforcement continue.
