Finance Minister Meets Energy Minister and Key Sector Players on Reliable, Affordable Electricity

The Minister for Finance, Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, convened a high-level meeting with key stakeholders in the energy sector to deliberate on measures to ensure a reliable, efficient, and affordable electricity supply for Ghanaians.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Finance, brought together Chief Executive Officers and senior officials from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Volta River Authority (VRA), Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), the Energy Commission, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), and other relevant agencies.

In his remarks, Dr. Ato Forson emphasised the importance of the power sector to national development and economic stability. He noted that despite the significant challenges within the sector, it remains crucial for government and industry players to work together to implement sustainable reforms that would guarantee uninterrupted power supply at fair and competitive tariffs.

Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor reiterated the Energy Ministry’s commitment to ongoing reforms under the Energy Sector Recovery Programme (ESRP) and assured stakeholders of government’s readiness to engage transparently on the issues confronting the sector.

The meeting discussed the need for improved operational efficiency, cost-reflective but fair tariffs, enhanced revenue collection, and policy adjustments to address inefficiencies in fuel procurement and power purchase agreements.

It concluded with a collective understanding of the urgency for bold, coordinated measures to tackle the sector’s financial and operational challenges. The stakeholders affirmed their commitment to work collaboratively to secure the stability of Ghana’s power sector and deliver reliable, affordable electricity for all.
