- Kwadwo Antwi Hat-Trick Fires Debibi United to Historic Promotion
Debibi United have secured a historic promotion to the Ghana Premier League after defeating Tamale City 3-1 in the Access Bank Division One League playoff at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday. The decisive playoff brought together the winners of the two Zone One groups, with the final promotion slot to Ghana’s top flight at stake. Debibi United delivered when it mattered most, producing a commanding performance built around a devastating first-half hat-trick from striker Kwadwo Antwi.
Antwi broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute, giving Debibi United the early advantage after a cagey opening period. Five minutes later, he doubled the lead to put his side firmly in control before completing his hat-trick in the 43rd minute, effectively killing off the contest before halftime.
The 10-minute scoring burst stunned Tamale City, who struggled to recover from Debibi United’s attacking intensity and clinical finishing.
Tamale City improved after the break and pulled one goal back, but Debibi United managed the game with discipline and composure to protect their advantage and seal one of the most important victories in the club’s history.
The result means Debibi United become the final club to qualify for the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League from the Division One League campaign.
They join Port City FC, who secured promotion from Zone Three, and FC AshantiGold 04, who advanced from Zone Two.
For Debibi United, promotion represents a major milestone and the beginning of a new chapter as the club prepares for its first campaign among Ghana’s elite football clubs.
Their victory also underlines the growing competitiveness of the Division One League, where several clubs continue to emerge with strong organisation, ambitious recruitment and increasing support from local communities.
Debibi United will now turn attention to preparations for life in the Premier League, where they will be tested against the country’s most established clubs.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Premier League relegation picture has already seen Hohoe United and Eleven Wonders drop out of the top flight with two matches still remaining in the season.
