- Manchester City Beat Crystal Palace to Keep Pressure on Arsenal in Premier League Title Race
Manchester City ensured the Premier League title race will continue for at least another week after cruising to a 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.
Pep Guardiola’s side delivered a controlled and professional performance to move within two points of league leaders Arsenal with two matches remaining, while also preserving a superior goal difference that could prove decisive if the race reaches the final day.
The result means Arsenal will have to wait before they can potentially seal a long-awaited Premier League crown, with City refusing to surrender their title defence despite knowing that any slip could effectively end their hopes.
City were dominant from the start, moving the ball with purpose and pinning Palace deep for long spells. Their early pressure was rewarded when Antoine Semenyo opened the scoring after a brilliant moment of invention from Phil Foden.
The England midfielder, operating with freedom in the final third, produced a clever backheel inside the penalty area to release Semenyo, who finished confidently to give the champions the lead.
Foden, who has struggled for consistency this season by the high standards he has set in recent campaigns, looked sharper and more decisive throughout the contest. His movement, close control and link-up play gave City the attacking rhythm they have often lacked in difficult spells this term.
He was heavily involved again as City doubled their advantage through Omar Marmoush, with the Egyptian forward continuing his strong form by finishing calmly after another well-worked attacking move in the final third.
Crystal Palace, disciplined but largely passive, found it difficult to create meaningful chances against a City side that controlled possession and dictated the pace of the game. Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson was called into action to prevent further damage, producing an excellent save to deny Josko Gvardiol, whose powerful header looked destined for goal.
City eventually added a third late in the game to seal a comfortable victory and complete an important night in the title race.
Despite the convincing scoreline, there remains a sense that the title is still Arsenal’s to lose. The Gunners’ dramatic win over West Ham earlier in the week kept them in control of the race and on course to end their 22-year wait for a Premier League title.
For City, however, the task is clear. Guardiola’s side must win their remaining league fixtures and hope Arsenal falter. Their next league assignment comes away to Bournemouth next Tuesday, a match that could ensure the title race goes to the final day if City take all three points.
Before then, attention will shift to Wembley, where City face Chelsea in Saturday’s FA Cup final. Guardiola rotated parts of his squad with that fixture in mind, handing opportunities to players on the fringes while managing the workload of key starters.
Marmoush took his chance with another important goal, further strengthening his case for a bigger role in City’s final push. Gvardiol also impressed on his return from a lengthy injury absence, offering defensive assurance and an attacking threat from set-pieces.
There was also a warm reception for John Stones, who made a brief appearance and was honoured by supporters before kick-off. City fans unveiled a banner commemorating his famous goal-line clearance against Liverpool during the club’s title-winning 2018/19 campaign a moment still remembered as one of the defining images of Guardiola’s domestic dominance.
But the night ultimately belonged to Foden. After a difficult and uneven campaign, the 25-year-old produced one of his most encouraging performances in months, reminding City supporters of his ability to tilt games with imagination and technical quality.
For Arsenal, the wait continues. For Manchester City, the chase remains alive.
With two matches left, the champions are still breathing down the necks of the leaders and as Guardiola’s side have shown repeatedly in previous title races, they rarely disappear quietly.
